What would one use to tint 5 or 30 minute epoxy pitch black with??? A friend suggested Rit dye??? Any comments or suggestions?

At the hobby and craft stores where they sell casting resin you will find the dyes that do that. Comes in black, white and other colors.

Woodcraft sells black and white furniture power that can color epoxy.

Behlen Furniture Powder does a great job. Can be gotten at Woodcraft as Willee mentioned.

I've used Behlen Master powder mixed with 2ton before, and It seemed to work well.

I have some rit dyes somewhere, but never tried them in epoxy, so could'nt say on that one, but it may work fine for all I know. Easy enough to do a small test sample and find out though.:) You can get the stuff in most stores. Even some grocery stores carry It I believe.

That kit with a color chart can make up any color you desire, the stuff is like food coloring, a couple of drops will do.

Yeah I could use something like that. I've been getting some jobs where the finish is chipped, but It has faded the stain at the same time in the chipped areas. A new full on refinish is'nt always in the cards like when I replace a buttcap, and cost is sometimes a concern for the owner, so I need to color the places back up before filling with finish or the faded area will show through. maybe this would help with stuff like that? I have a box of markers, but sometimes with luck I find a perfect match, and other times I can only get close. It would be nice to have the flexibility of mixing tints.

I use that colourant that paint stores use. They will sell you whatever colour you want.

The golf club supply shops like Golfsmith sell black epoxy, if you don't want to mess with mixing. It is the high-strength long-cure-time type epoxy, not the 5 minute type.

I sell a small can of black powder epoxy dye. It is better than most liquid epoxy dyes in that the finish won't pick up the dye out of it like they do the liquid epoxy dyes. $5 per 2 oz can.

Behlen's is by far the best. I agree with Chris that the powder works better than the liquid, though it is a little bit harder to mix in. Behlen's ("fine furniture powder") can be purchased at any wood working or hobby shop. I think Atlas also sells it.

I don't know if they still carry it but Rio Grande used to carry epoxy resin in about 60 different colors and they could be blended to make more colors. This was epoxy resin and you added a hardener to it and used it to glue in inlays or you could use it to fill pockets and use it as an inlay.
