Are ivory ferrules changed differently from a non ivory ferrule? What's the Fiber pad used for, and is it simply superglued on the ferrule? Thanks in advance.

I treat Ivory ferrules the same as others, except I always make them with a 1/4" solid cap on the end, & use a fiber pad under the tip. The pad is supposed to distribute the shock of off center hits, accross the whole top of the ferrule. Whether it does that or not, I always error on the safe side...JER

some ppl think if you keep a high tip the ivory will be ok but i always use a pad also.

pad is glued just like a tip. i dont rough pads up

you have to drill and tap your own ivory where u can buy most non ivory ferrules pre drilled and tap. still 5x16-18

Thank you for sharing. I am very impressed by the class and expertise knowledge on this forum. Way to go!

i have never used a pad with ivory and have had the tips pretty low at times and never had one crack.

welcome are you looking to do it yourself or has it done by someone else?

In theory, the fiber pad keeps lateral (sideways) forces from being exerted on the ferrule by a thin or mushrooming tip. This factor is very minimal (or non-existant) with capped ferrules, and/or layered tips. The only reasons I ever put a fiber pad on a ferrule is by customer request, or if I have a thin-walled, through ferrule made of brittle material.

Looking to practice tip changes on a cheap shaft, but would like to graduate to replace tips on my ivory ferrules.

I'm chaning a tip on an ivory ferrule w/ a pad between the ferrule and the tip. Can the pad be reused or should it be replaced as well?

There's no need to change the pad. Leave it on there as long as it is still completely adhered to the ferrule. That way, you can save the ferrule from gradual erosion from facing multiple times.

yes like gene said i used the same pad for years

Save your self the hassle and go to a pro. They will have all of the tools and knowledge to get the job done right the first time.

I sincerely wish him well, but chances are, a pro will get this eventually anyway. About 25% of my repair work comes from botched do-it-yourself jobs.

Most don't understand that this art form is not as easy as it looks, if done right.
