Tip Diameter

I was wondering if anyone knew whether most pros play with the same or similar tip size. My curiosity arose from the fact that most of the high end production shafts I see have 11.75, yet most Joss cues (which I understand to be at least a decent production cue) come with a 13.25mm tip (at least they do at the website I frequent). This seems like quite a disparity. Any info, even if it just relates to particular players, would be helpful.

I will tell you this NO standard high production shafts come out 11.75 except predator z and that is a european taper and more similar to snooker. The standard is between 12.75 and 13 and i would say the industry standard is 13mm
 
they might but in your post you said most. If they do that is 2 predatorz and mcdermott i. Thats not most and by far is no where near the standard.
 
I would say the "standard" is 12.75 or 13 mm. Predator 314s and several others come as 12.75, a lot of nice production cues come as 13s. Custom cues come with whatever you order, obviously. Joss gives you 13.25 for two reasons: it's a very solid-hitting shaft at that diameter, and Joss, like Schon, values a very solid hit, and also because you can remove shaft wood, but you can't add it. A good 12mm shaft is totally useless to someone who really wants 13mm, whereas a good 13mm shaft can become a good 12mm shaft very easily.

I would guess that 90 to 95% of all cues come with a 13mm shaft or as close to 13mm that their turning procedures allow them. There are a few specialty shafts with smaller diameter shafts and of coarse Joss has a larger shaft as they say they make them that way so that you can install whatever taper that you prefer onto the shaft.

The industry standard Tip Diameter is 13mm.
 
The thing is if using a dime shaped tip (which Predator recommends), you will not be able to reshape your tip very many times as the shaft size at the tip gets larger.

As the shaft gets larger, the curve on the tip gets closer and closer to the ferrule.

I feel 12.5 or 12.75 is about max when using a dime shaped tip.

I use a dime shape on 13mm shafts, and there is PLENTY of height left for MANY reshapings. The difference in tip life between a dime shaped 12mm and a dime shaped 13mm, while it does exist, is quite minimal, and shouldn't really be taken into consideration, as long as a tip of full height is installed to begin with.

The dome height of any tip with a round tip radius can be found:

D = C - C * cos( arcsin( (T / 2) / C ) )

where:

D = dome height
C = coin radius
T = tip diameter

Substituting C = 8.955 mm for a dime radius
and T = 12 mm, for a 12 mm tip diameter

we obtain: D = 2.307 mm

Substituting C = 8.955 mm for a dime radius
and T = 13 mm, for a 13 mm tip diameter

we obtain: D = 2.795 mm

Since S = H - D ,

where: S = shoulder height
and H = thickness of new, unshaped tip,

we can easily see that the difference in shoulder height in a 12 mm tip and a 13 mm tip, both shaped to a dime radius, is less than 0.5 mm. I know of no production tip where this is a significant portion of the tip thickness.

I believe tip scuffing method, chalking method, how often a player reshapes the tip and how hard a player likes to shoot all have a larger affect on tip life than the choice between a nickel and dime radius.

It is illogical to allow tip diameter to influence one's choice of tip shape.
