for tips and ferrules i normally use 800, 1000, 2000, then a piece of fabric to really shine up the ferrule and tip after i am finished with it. i dont use any liquid or spit as most others would. anwyay, after shooting for about 5 hours, the ferrule still looks shiny as glass but all my tips mushroom a bit and looks dry and rough on the sides (i use elkmaster, triangle, and water buffalos). i know there are liquid leather burnishers out there. what would you recommend as the best bang for the buck and something that will last me a while as far as a liquid burnisher? is it the same as shaft sealer? bear with me, i have the basics down, just looking for the icing on the cake so to say.
thanks,
Jay

Hi Jay; I guess my question is "if every body else is using liquid on the tip edge, than why don't you"? (JUST KIDDIN'). After trimming & sanding the tip edge I use a little ammonia. Then I burnish with leather. Then I coat the edge with super glue gel & wipe off the excess & shape...JER

Then you're doing something wrong. If we lived in the same town & your customers have to bring their tip jobs back, for a tune up & mine don't. Then pretty soon, your customers would be mine. Do you use the ammonia & sealer? I have a water buffalo on one of my playing Qs & a Elkmaster on the other. I play 5 times a week & usually break with these Qs. It's been 4 months & still no mushroom. I've been repairing Qs since 1982. If there is anything I can do to help, please e-mail me...JER

I use the stuff atlas sells and I think it is the same as the tiger products stuff. Liquid leather burnisher. The little bottle will last a long time as you only need a drop per tip. Spit works too. just have to get the right piece of leather for burnishing.

I was useing a willards tipper/trimmer(sold it and buying a mini lathe)but do all the rest by hand!!I use a plastic burnisher as well as leather(and do it 2-3 times 2 minutes apart)used spit for a long time boaught this liquid burnisher from an old man awhile back!oh I have done tips by hand since 82-83 myself(only recently got a shaft spinner but its too rickety

i use spit or sealer...lol depends on which i have more of. :D

as far as you tip as it mushrooms its gonna be a little funky on the ends. i press my tips and they still move a little. when someone asks me how to stop this i always say the same thing. im not superman.

if i could stop a tip from mushrooming then i may have the market cornered. not happenin!!!:p

OK ... Big secret here.

After you install and shape the tip bounce it on the floor a few dozen times.
Reshape the side of the tip and use a dab of MED super glue to soak in and toughen up the side of the tip. Not much ... just a dab.
Not only will it resist mushrooming it will polish up like glass.
