Tip getting round from play??

Normally you hear player's tips getting flat or mushroomed from play. Mine seem to get rounder. At first I thought it was the way I cue the ball, maybe using too much english sometimes, but then I started thinking about it, I do chalk a lot between shots, which might be one of the causes. I never use any tip tool on it after the tip has been put on. Anyone have any thoughts about it?

Combination of the 2. Off center hits will increase the tip radius on a soft-medium tip just like pounding center ball will flatten one. Then depending on how you chalk, if you are wiping the chalk across the tip you can shape the tip ever so slightly. Chalk is definitely abrasive.

Why would you never shape your tip? If you play guitar would you ever tune it? Your cue needs to be maintained every time you play. I always check my cue before I put it away so I know it is ready to play with the next time I take it out.
