Tip Height - What do you prefer??

I like a thinner tip. Not down to the ferrul, but to me, a tip plays its best when it has been broken in and is maybe 1/16" think. Just my .02.

Tip thickness...

I have been retipping my own cues for over twenty five years now. Did it by hand until I got my lathe, almost three years ago. Once the tip gets installed, the first 1/3 gets trimmed off. Seems like a huge waste, but what you get in consistency after it's trimmed is a much bigger benfit than keeping the full original height. Before I put any new tip on, it gets pressed in a vise, solid or layered. This also adds to the tip being more consistent and stable. Once installed, it will get trimmed flush with the ferrule, and have a very slight(2-3 degrees) taper. By doing the new tip this way, I almost never have to get rid of any mushroom after the new tip gets played.

I like the Kamui tips very much but also prefer them thinner, up to 50% thinner than they come out of the tin. Given that these tips are not exactly cheap has anyone tried just cutting them in half prior to installation?

Would this enable you to get two thin tips for the price of one, or would it shred the tip in the process?

i had a kamui on my shaft with only one layer as the sidewall of the tip. It played great but got nicked in the center and had to replace. Now starting all over again but with a WB tip. I whittle it down a little more after every time i play.
