I've always done snooker cue tips on my own using the usual tools... Tip maintenance (shaping) always required nothing more than a bit of fine grit sandpaper. I always felt this was a pretty foolproof exercise given the brass ferrule (and the earful of 'advice' from dad and grandad over the years).
Was always a bit scared to have a go on my pool shafts given the more fragile ferrule material. I also feel I am tending to my pool cue tip much more often, and with a shaping tool (every few months). I assume this is because it's bigger, softer and the balls are heavier. Yesterday, I needed to change tip due to carelessly gauging a chunk from a perfectly good one while leaning out the door for a smoke (another reason to quit that filthy habit).
Last night, the boss who usually sorts out my tip let me have a go at putting a new one on using a tip installation gizmo, and the store lathe. Was fast, fun and so easy. Considering buying my own lathe from Taobao (adding to list of stuff I don't really need but want
)
Here is my box of tat I keep in my locker at my local snooker hall, and a MW tip I installed on my Cheshire Ultimate.
Here is the new tip on my Musashi VI shaft - Using a Moori M I had spare, and it played nicely from the get go (maybe placebo from the installation process )
