What do you prefer and use and why?

Before I quit pool, most players would use the tip pick, now I see that most use a scuffer.
Now that I'm back, I still use the Tip-Pick but was wondering if there is an advantage to a scuffer?

Depends on the type of tip you're using.

Tip pics on layered tips are risky as they can penetrate layers and then twist, separating the layers

Traditional scuffers like the brad are pretty coarse and will wear the tip quickly.

Scuffers like the kamui gator (there are many brands offering same) are the way to go, imo.

Rub it gently, baby.

Why twist with the pick?
just tap lightly or press it down gently.
I've never had a tip delaminate on me due to using a pick.
The only denger with the pick when tapping with it is if miss the edge, you nigh cut the tip a bit.
I migh pick up a modern style scuffer and see what it's all about...
Any recommendations on a scuffer other than Kamui?

The twist can be subtle though. Perfectly vertical is probably tough without some sort of guide?

I used to use a tapper that came in its little holder on my Justis Case. Then someone absconded with it one day and I’ve used a tip pick since then.

IMHO there are only two things you need carry for TIP MAINTENANCE. Small Square of 220 Sandpaper, and NEW US NOTE, Could be $1.00 or.

Sand paper is Scuffer, Note is for Tip Mushrooms.

I use the round willard shaper then pick it
every day before use, keep the shape and scuff on point
just a light twist to scuff

If you tap it rather than push it, there's no time for a twist to occur. Have used nothing but Tip Piks on my layered tips for decades - never a "twist" or delamination.

I used to use a tip pick, but i have since switched from a soft to hard tip and the pick doesn't work as well. Just use a Willard's tool when i need it, which is a lot less with the hard tip.

Never had a problem with the pick on hard tips. I also use it on the phenolic tips of my breal and jump cues

I've bought all the "toys" and tools at one point or another. The best thing I've every used is a 1" square of about 220 grit sandpaper. It works better, isn't tearing the hell out of your tip and costs pennies. A 1" square of sandpaper is literally the best tip tool there is.

Things like a kamui gator grip or knockoffs are good too, especially on phenolic or bakelite etc. They take a bit more work since they are flat but they work well.

Tip picks are a joke. Scuffers are a joke. Picks can cause de-lamination and I've seen plenty of ferrules damaged with them through careless use. A cue repairman would be wise to recommend brad scuffers because that will guarantee more tip work. Brads aren't bad but most people just go hog wild with them like they are starting a fire.
