I am sure this has came up before ..using a tip press/constant pressure or impact/ natural work in of tips.. which is the "best" way?
Thanks

Pressing tips will stop some of them from mushrooming. Many soft tips will mushroom and require dressing up even if you press them.

I don't like work coming back so I press tips. If they do mushroom I dress them for free.

Here is a new idea. Sit a tip under one of those automatic power hammers for a day or two. Trim it to shape every so often, and repeat. (is that what you are talking about with impact?)

I notice on new tips, I can go weeks reshaping it to my desired radius, never removing anything from the center of the tip. I can't believe the amount of compression you get pushing a little white ball around.

While I'm thinking about it, would there be a noticeable difference between a pressed tip where it is harder everywhere, and a broken in tip where all of the compression is in the center?

Hi,

I don't press my tips as a general rule.

I believe the tip should break in via the way the player strokes the ball.

All of my regular customers know that I tune up, re crown and re burnish tips for free at any time.

If someone comes to me and says I want a Pressed Le Pro for example, no problem, I do it stat.

JMO,

Rick
