I have recently started changing my own tips..they are not as perfect as they could be with a lathe.. but they are serviceable and shoot just fine..

my tip of choice is medium hard triangle..

I was thinking of buying a box.. how long do they stay in prime condition?

I go through about 2 tips a year is the savings per tip worth it? or will half the box be wasted?

Triangles, LePros, Elks and such come 50 in a box.
Consider that you may want to try other tips down the road so buying a full box may not be worthwhile.
Tips like Triangle don't change much in price so IMO you're better served getting a few at a time.

maybe 50 is to many to buy.. but the question remains... how long do they last??.. or are they treated to last forever?

is there such a thing as a tip that's too old? or too dry?....

Is an old dry tip just classified as hard? if so I might just buy a box anyway.. the harder the better... as long as it will hold chalk.

I'm pretty sure that for the most part tips last for quite awhile as long as you keep them sealed in there container. I have never had a problem with them ...

I haven't looked, and I'm not saying this is the wrong section of the forum to ask this, but you may ask this question in the Cue Repair or Cuemaker's section of the forum. They might be a little more knowledgeable on this topic since they have to stock and install tips themselves.

I've had tips that have been put on my cues that I have had for well over a year, and I have never noticed any difference in play. I play just as badly with old tips as with new ones. :grin-square:

Good question.
We did retipping for years and stocked several different types but I don't recall any problem with tips going bad.
