Tip Shelf Life

Assuming the conditions are not extreme in one direction or another, what is the shelf life of leather tips? Shelf life meaning that they maintain the original consistency as when they were produced. Has there been enough time to know if laminated tips pass the test of time? Please elaborate.

Also, below is a list of tips that come to mind. Can you name others not on the list?

I have started a list (no particular order) and would greatly appreciate it if others would fill in the blanks. Let's not make this another "preferred tip" thread. Just a list of names. If the tip is a more obscure one, please add where they can be purchased.

Thanks guys.

Kamui, Molavia, Sumo, and Tad are a few not on your list.

With regard to shelf life, since cue tips are natural, they do deteriorate, but you should be able to have any tip for 1-2 years unused without there being much of a change.

We actually have a tip dryer where all of our tips cure for at least a month before they go out. A tip that is too fresh will move and won't hold chalk very well.

List is adding up

Thanks Corey. The tip dryer, I'm sure, is just part of the reason Tiger makes such outstanding tips.

I forgot about the ones you listed. I'm hoping others come up with more brands. I don't know of a complete list ANYWHERE. Maybe we can come up with one here on AZ.

Part of the reason I asked the question about shelf life is that there are vintage and antique tips out there that some are installing for customers at a premium price. eg. the old Triangles. Curious as to if they are still quality tips after all this time.

Anyone know?

I recently bought a box of the 30-some-year-old Triangles. I installed on on a cue and between myself and a buddy shooting with it for an evening, it seemed to play fine. It's been years since I used a Triangle tip, so I can't really compare it to a "modern" version of the Triangle. Installation and finishing was no more of a chore than usual. It actually burnished up very nicely. I think the difference in the case of these old Triangles is that they were tanned via a different process then they are now. Someone else might be able to provide details of the tanning processes/differences.

Excellent Ragbug74! I was hoping someone that bought those tips would see this. Did you buy them from the seller on ebay? He has sold hundreds of those tips and I'm sure there has to be others that have tried them out.

What about the other tips out there that are vintage or even antique. Has anyone tried them on their cue?

I have updated the list to include the ones that Corey of Tiger Products added. Are there any additional brands of tips that are not listed. I would like to compile a complete list.

killer, wizard and win tips come to mind. i think adam makes some tips too. Not too sure of their name.

Thanks Tony. I don't believe I've heard of any of those. Do you know where they come from? Who makes them?

Gene

Cuedog,

Yes, I bought them from the seller on eBay. Smooth transaction, nice tips (as far as I can tell).

you can get wizards and win's from jjcue.com as far as killers......only sold to one person in the nation. A buddy of mine buys about 10 form him every couple months and they sell like hotcakes. for 45 a tip installed. I personally shoot with this tip. It's a bit on the firm side so if you like a hard tip than it is for you. can't speak for the other 2 but I know they're pretty cheap and can't be more than like 6 bucks a tip. But don't quote me. The adams tips I'm not so sure. I've seen them in person but yet to see them online....but then again. I'm not looking. Oh and you also can't forget the samurai tip. Those tips play awesome. I love them. They are a layered waterbuffalo tip. I think alot better than the talisman.

But that's just my opinion.

Thanks VC. You are obviously correct about there being some missing ones. After all, this wouldn't be a participatory thread if I listed them all. I couldn't anyway! You listed some that I am not familiar with such as Lily, Stratus, and Apus III.

Can you, or someone take time to indicate where they can be purchased?

Thank you for your contribution. The list continues to GROW!

I'll try to compile the list in some sort of format after we exhaust the different types. Thanks again to all that have and will help with this. Hopefully, I am not the only one that finds this useful and somewhat interesting.

New tip name

I'm hoping to add another name to this list sometime soon! I purchased the tip press from Dan Goble (Yak cues) and I'll be picking it up over the July 4th weekend. It will take some time for me to learn what works best. I need some help trying to come up with a name for the tips! Anyone have any good ideas? This will be fun!
