Tip-Tapper Tool Discussion

I'm not much of a wood worker either but , I've installed enough pressure tanks for water systems that I needed a bit more room to make everything work properly ha ha

I still have a Brad's. Used to keep one in my back pocket when going in bars without a cue. Could always get a pos wall cue to play ok with a little work with one.
One other thing I used to carry into bars, a small piece of scotch brite. The shafts on the house cues were always so rough they were hard to play with. But by using the scotch brite I could smooth them out and make them playable.

Jay , I watched a fella get a couple of the napkins and a salt shaker from a bartender , lay it on his hand after removing the top of the shaker then pour some on the napkins then run it up and down on the shaft section of the cue granted it worked but scotch bright works better when you have it .

Small metal bastard file.
That's what I use instead of a tip tapper so that I don't have to carry another special purpose tool around. Good for mushrooming and shaping. The other useful tool instead of sandpaper are my wife's old nail files. The center of the files never get used as nail files.

The best tapper I ever saw was made by Brianna but I doubt you can still get one. Has enough size and heft to use and do a good job breaking up the glaze. I had to drill the hole and put the string on it.

That's a new one on me. We're never to old to learn!

I listened to my buddy Frank McGown many year's ago on the 4 way wood rasp for a tip trapper yes it's a bit over kill but it works wonders when needed .
When done I wrap a handkerchief around it and put it away in my case until it's needed again which isn't very often .

i have one of @pooldawg8 milk duds and he mentions not to use a scuffer or tip tapper on his tips. Pooldawg can you chime in with your reasons, and also how you would suggest dealing with the tip when it starts to miscue?

I love these tips btw, im on my third one. Might have to order more soon

Edit: i was incorrect, scroll down for @pooldawg8 ’s reply

I was not aware of this. I use his duds and shape them occasionally.
I use either an AB Earth tool, an It's George, or what may be a Cuestix, 8" shaper.
They are all fairly aggressive but are not needed often.

I don`t think I said scuffer or tip tapper. I tell people not to over scuff them as they are soft tips begin with And over scuffing them may cause them to fluff up. And to me over scuffing them will wear the tip down quicker. I do tell people not to use the tip prick gadget (not sure of its name) because I was told that, that will puncture the leather & it could rip the tip apart. If you do have miscues, you can always scuff the tip alittle. I use a Willards nickel scuffer, myself. Just don`t over do it. Hope this helps anyone using my MD tips. Have a great day

thanks so much, sorry if i misquoted you. I didnt realize the difference between a tapper and a pick. Keep up the good work

It only punctures the leather a tiny amount (to a depth of 1/16" or so), and doesn't cause any damage unless you twist it or rub it across the leather. I've used one exclusively on layered tips for 20+ years with no problems.

Thanks for your info Patrick, much appreciated sir. I`m only referencing the tip prick that looks like a porcupine. I was told it damages the leather. I have watched league players jam that thing in there quite a ways. Appreciate your kind words sir. Have a nice day
