Can anyone give what the proper tip thickness to ferrule diameter should be? I read it once on here a few months ago but forgot what the rule of thumb was. Ant info would be greatly appreciated.
You normally see about half the diameter used for the thickness of a new tip. Some of the layered tips out there specify a little less due to the tendency for the layers to rip/seperate if the tip is left thicker than that.

Through my experience, I like to leave the tip 2 nickels thick. Most of the local good players like their tips down to a dime or a single nickel thick. I prefer mine to be about a nickel thick. Seems very short, but the closer you get to the ferrule, the better you will feel Q ball. Just my .02 cents worth. If you have never tried it, try it, you might like it.
I don't think there is any one answer to this. I have some customers who want the tips as tall as possible, so they will last the longest. Then I have some customers who want them trimmed so much, that they look like they need a new tip when I hand them back the cue. It is really just a matter of personal preference, in my opinion.
