Tip Tool Question

I have a potentially silly question. I am new to the world of Layered tips and I have found that I really like Tiger Snipers. My question is, what is the best tip tool to cut down (height wise) and shape (dime preferred) layered tips in your experience?

I know that putting them on the lathe and using a razor blade is probably the best way to do this, but I don't own a repair lathe yet. Any opinions?

Not silly at all. Thats how many of the cue makers first got into repairing and making. Probably most.

Joe Porper makes (imho) the best tipping tools.
I bought a book, How To Tip a Pool Cue. The Layman's Guide.
Very extensive book that takes you thru everything. The book also contains
a list of about every tip available and list their properties and hardness rating. Cheap book too.

Seyberts has a kit for $60 that has everything you need. Includes Porper's tools.

I basically did the same and later did a couple of things a bit different. I also got the Porper Mushroom Grazer as well.
The one tip tool that you get in the kit that cuts down to ferulle size and nickel shapes is good. You have to be careful as the cutter will shape your tip in a cone fashion if you don't handle it proper.
Other than that, the nickel shaper does a perfect job.
All those tools are available separately too.

If you're careful you can pull off a perfect job the first time.

The plastic tip trimmer that holds a strip of 100 grit garnet sandpaper , at Muellers . Spin the cue as you file the tip . Takes some talent to use properly but practice makes perfect . I 've used one for more years than I can remember . Great for scuffing too ... :cool:;)

But as other's will likely point out - you can buy a basic repair lathe from Todd (TSP&B here) or Chris Hightower (Cueman) for just a little more.

Ithink he meant something to shape the top of the tip, not install tips. The williard shaper also found on that site is excellent, it has brazed in carbide and a radius gage.
