Tipping tournament directors - do you tip on calcutta amount as well?

If you consistently cash strong, you should be tipping somebody.
Why? If you consistently cash strong in a handicapped event then the handicapping is probably incorrect. Open events - the best players wins.
Price to enter any event should include TDs expected compensation for running the event - then no questions after the fact like who tipped/ how much/ etc. Etc.
I tipped when placing top 3 in some tournaments only bc I sensed negative retribution in future same TD run events - it is like “ do it or face future discrimination” the vibe is there - no one can deny it and it is wrong IMO - nobody held my cue but me day and night on the table.

If its a tournament where you draw the number and hand it to the TD and you see he/she fill the bracket then its ok. No need to tip.

If its a tournament where you draw the number and they write it down in a notebook and later fill it out in a private room. Tip them before they fill out the bracket. LOL

The page in the notebook gets immediately thrown away. Its assumed the TD is fair so nobody challenges them. Till one day, a well known TD here, started taking the brackets in a private room. It's often done when professionals are in attendance. They get separated. So at least one pro can get the dead money. You will hardly see the pros take each other out and some shortstop dominates one side of the bracket.

These big, added money, memorial tournaments are known for this.

I am generally considered a very good tipper at bars, restaurants, barbers, massage therapy, etc, provided the service was good. However, for me tipping a TD is very situation specific. I have tipped TDs in events whether I cashed or not, as well as declined to tip in one or two that I won. It all depends on how well they did their job and how much their efforts impacted my enjoyment of the tournament. The events I am talking about are small local or semi-regional tournaments where the TD is unpaid or receives only a token payment and has no staff. I don't play in larger events, but if I did I doubt I would tip the TD no matter where I finished.

I'll give a tip, "Practice Practice Practice ". 🤷‍♂️ 😉 I did "tip" Ronnie Allen, once in Chico. 🤷‍♂️ He sat next to the money pockets owner and watched me harvest 320. He asked to borrow 20 at the after drink. I explained that I don't loan but I would gift 20, as I had $20 worth of lessons based on stories of his accomplishments. 🤷‍♂️ A short while later he asked for another, Loan. 🤷‍♂️ uh no. 🤷‍♂️

if you tip to continue what you probably dont deserve then you are making a bribe. and also punishing or trying to cheat those that
are also there by getting special and unequal treatment. that is just wrong.

although many do and it is also part of the tipping culture.

ronnie must of asked me for money or tried to steer me into a trap many times. only time i gambled with him was on the putting green at the sahara golf course and broke him and didn't give him any walking money.

I don't mind them getting paid but tipping is horrible.

The human mind is crazy. We feel better when we outsmart someone. Outsmarting people is much more satisfactory than beating someone based on skill. Eventually, you know you're good at pool because you play all the time. Beating a lesser player or a better player usually involves some sort of luck but a lot of skill too. Cool.

Outsmarting someone or gaming the system is much more satisfactory since it involves intellect. For two great players and a tournament director to conspire to take all the money is much more satisfactory. A tip before/after a tournament means you and another player were given favorable seeding in a bracket. Both of you take all the money and kick the TD with some for helping you. That is much more celebrated than legitimately winning.

It happens in pool when 2 guys would hustle their backers. I had a bad day and lost. Please pay him. Meet opponent at another location. LOL

Only scumbags and degenerates would celebrate that kind of behavior.

when i was younger. a long time ago. the general tip was ten percent if you got great service.
now like in restaurants its like 20% or more is expected no matter what the bill or service was like.

and inflation in the food industry is higher than ever so the tip to bill ratio is higher than ever compared to inflation.

many countries pay a living wage to all and dont have tipping.
in the u.s. many places pay substandard wages and expect to have the customers supplement the service wages.

in recent years many or most states are now requiring service workers to get the full minimum wage. instead of the special lower one from years back.

at one of the coffee shops i have breakfast in the waitress says she makes 16 an hour plus tips. 32,000 in salary plus she makes over 40,000 in tips which she doesnt pay taxes on. so 70,000 a year half of which is tax free money to her that those that gave it paid taxes on.

She may not be paying taxes on tips but that doesn't mean they aren't owed. Unless something has changed I believe tips are very much taxable income. Showing $32,000 salary and no tips as a waitress or bartender is raising a red flag to the IRS. I do agree that income is taxed over and over. If we add up all the taxes we pay it is quite a chunk! Last I calculated well over twenty years ago we paid over fifty percent, a lot taxes on taxes. How crazy is it when we pay significant excise taxes then we pay sales tax on those excise taxes!

Yes yes yes but who magically sorts your path to the cash?

pay thru the nose. that is the easiest way to get blood from someone.

I got a wee bit behind on my taxes in the eighties. Uncle Sugar naturally wasn't happy but my outgoing had exceeded income in a small business when we had a local slump. I suggested $700 a month. They said they had to seize my bank accounts before they could set up a payment plan. Also said they had to give three weeks notice before seizing the accounts. I had three, business account, road account, and personal. With three weeks notice I naturally went on a cash basis. They seized less than a thousand then asked if I could pay four hundred a month. They had ran up six months penalties and interest before seizing my accounts so I didn't mention I had already offered seven hundred a month! Had they taken the seven hundred a month the debt would have already been paid.
