Good afternoon everybody,

I am getting ready to graduate Nursing School (second career, I'm retired Army) and am treating myself to the Basic Cue Repair Lathe from Mid-America as a present. I don't know if I'm more giddy of actually getting my real lathe (opposed to the Frankenstein I made years ago) or that school is about to finally be over. Either way, big day for me :)

I am very lucky to have Joe Blackburn as my local repair guy. He has shown me a little here or there in care of certain things with my sticks, but I hate bothering him with what I am sure could become in-depth classes. I would never want Joe to think of his tidbits to me becoming work.

I would like to know your suggestion of DVD for learning to do tips, ferrules, and tenons. I have found Cue Components and Uniques offerings and would like to know of any others you may recommend. I'm motivated strictly for taking care of my own cues and the guys down at the VFW that need attention from time to time. Quality instruction is a plus! Thanks for your time answering.

Regards,
~Roy

start with youtube and look up some of your more knowledgeable people. Bob Dzurichy has a great youtube channel. Tiger also has some decent stuff.

I have Hightower's book and have used it for many moons =) I didn't think about his DVD series.

I really seem to be torn between Hightowers and Barringers. Barringers includes tenons. Hightowers tenon is on a seperate dvd.

Any fans of Uniques Tips, ferrules, tenon DVD? Thanks for all the inside fellas. I appreciate it.

Why bother doing your own tips and ferrules ?
Joe is local to you. He is one of the best there is.

Hi Roy. I have Chris's book/DVD and Joe B's DVD. They both help. Any pointers you get are a plus. Some of my best advice came from the people on this forum that were kind enough to chat by phone. There are a lot of sharing craftsman here. Everyone pitched in suggesting cutting bits and technique. Ask questions and post pictures of what you have done for review & critique.
I bought a Mid Size a few months ago. I'm enjoying the learning process. Todd (MidAmerica) will help you put also. He is all about customer service. His lathes are quality stuff. He's a quality person.
I bought some cheap dowels from Home Depot. Also bought maple dowels from Joe B to practice on. Good luck. Have fun.

Thanks Goldcrown!

I really appreciate the advice. Thanks for the tip on the home depot dowels. Makes perfect sense. I should be making my order the 2nd week of march to Todd. I just want all my T's crossed before calling him, and plenty of cash in the account for the "need to haves". I will go ahead and order Joe B's DVD to start off with :grin-square:

I keep going through his inventory seeing things like rotary cutter adapter, drilling tailstocks, ect. I keep hearing, "kaching, kaching, kaching" :) I just want to get it right without bothering him too much with additional calls <grin.>
