Tips on removing butt rubber

Have a cue that I was told is an old McDermott that I need to clean/repair the wrap on, and I tried to remove the butt rubber and it won't come out. It turns pretty freely, but doesn't unscrew, tried to carefully pry the edge with a scraper blade but it won't budge. There isn't any other marking on the butt except for the rubber plug with the shamrock on it, didn't Mcdermott always have a shamrock emblem on the butt sleeve? Any tips to remove it are welcome. Thanks,
Dave

Some Mcdemott cues have a bumper that you need a special set of pliers to grip and pull out. The pliers have rubber or some type of plastic jaw as to not mark up the bumper. gotta be real careful not to mess up the butt cap......Dave

McDermott does sell a pair of specially made pliers to remove their press in bumper but they don't have any plastic or anything else to protect the bumper. They tear up the bumper also and to do the job correctly you usually need to replace the bumper with a new one.

Hi Dave; I have the plyers from Mcdermott, that are made to remove their rubber bumper. It is made of metal, but doesn't harm the bumper. For years I took them out by gripping the bumper with plyers & CAREFULLY prying up on the bottom of the bumper, with a screw driver...JER

I've had success with a pair of channel locks, and a rag. Be extremely careful with that butt cap!

It will actually come out pretty easy. Put a few drops of oil around the base of the bumper and let it seep in under it. Twist it around a little so the oil gets spread around then just use your thumbs and press it sideways and it will pop right out. Clean it up before replacing it.

IN MY PROFESSIONAL OPINION:

I have been extracting McDermott bumpers for years without the special pliers they sell specifically for that procedure....

take a strong pair of textured needle nose vice-grip pliers and wrap duct tape around each prong and that will grip the the bumper without scarring and continually work perfectly well !

I am pleased to announce that with all the help,... the Butt Rubber has been removed successfully! :) :) I used a pair of channellocks, and no damage to the rubber. Thanks for all the assistance. Have a great nite.
