I sand the glue side of the tip (I use 120 paper) and apply a thin CA puddle........... count to 10 and dab the excess off with a new paper towel.............. hit it with kicker and lightly sand it................... cut a new face on the ferrule ............ press a piece of 120 grit on the face and spin the chuck a turn or 2.............. wipe the tip and ferrule with a new paper towel............... add a pea size bubble of CA gel (there are many) press it on and count to 10................. wipe off the excess with a paper towel and turn on the lathe............ hit it with kicker................ trim to size and shape................ a very few will pop off ........... more on a chinese cue with a soft ferrule................ I just change the ferrule for free............ because I will need to do it when the tip pops off any way....................... anybody the says that they have never had a tip pop off is a liar or they have only put on one

Don't use the kicker. It makes the glue brittle. This is especially problematic in gluing a tip because there's impact. The bond can actually shatters. Examine the tip and ferrule and see if you can tell where the failure is. Also the cheap cues have ferrules that are often like a nylon material. Very hard to glue to either way.

This is from a glue maker:
Bottom line: let the CA cure on its own or only use a small amount of accelerator on the glue joint. kicker def reduces strength. Accelerator will actually weaken the bond in many cases. If you want maximum strength, let the CA harden on it's own.

120 too coarse. try 320 you will not have a problem with separation. no kicker!

try counting to 60 why such a hurry. things that need to dry do so differently in different conditions.

make sure you use one of the top brands of gel ca. cheap isnt always the same. and it must come from an unopened bottle or tube as the stuff loses its effectiveness quickly after the first time of use.

ive never did the tip twice and never had one come off.

Many years ago, I had a tip pop off when I installed it with the "old style", Tweeten cement, that needed to cure overnight. I've never had a tip pop off when I used CA.

I’ve never had a tip pop off and I’ve been through plenty. Usually they just wear down or I get superstitious and change it. But I’ve been mostly playing one pocket for the last couple of decades. I guess if you’re breaking with your player in 9 ball the chance is greater for a failure, but Steve Price has been doing mine for years with no issues. Hard to trust anyone else with my ivory ferrules.

I score the tip by running it across the the fine side of a flat file.

Place file on table; fine side up.

Use both hands to press and move the tip across the grooves. This requires developing your own hand technique to stabilize file and tip while cutting unless you simply clamp the file down.

You want one set of discrete grooves. Then turn tip 90 degrees and repeat. Done.

This goes against the grain, but I've been using LocTight 2 part epoxy for many many years. No problems. 5 minutes to set, 24 hours to fully cure.

Honestly the only time I have had a tip come off from my current installer is when I was shaping them myself and doing it wrong by putting it into a T shaped PVC pipe with sandpaper and pushing down hard while turning. Since I stopped doing that none have fallen off. He does a really good job installing them and falling off just isn't a problem.

I had a few come off after getting a tip holder for the tailstock and clamping the tip on too firm. Squeezed out the glue. No more problems after switching to light pressure.

Quick thread jack from Maryland. Anyone in the southern MD or Annapolis area? Who does your tips? Why is it so hard for me to get my damn tip changed lol

I’ve never had a tip fly off but I’ve scratched up my ferrule and messed up a few tips trying it myself without a lathe.

In that area, go to Phillippi. Or drive a bit more north and go the Charlie's.

These CA glues can go bad in a short time. In the last 40 years of putting my own tips on I have tried many of them. The best I have used is the Gorilla Super Glue Gel . That formula has chlorinated rubber included with the glue , that helps keep the glue joint from what is called a shock fracture. If one ever comes off now , it was because of either old glue or a bad fitting of the tip to the ferrule. I don't use anything else with the glue, I just make sure the product isn't past it's expectoration date printed on the side of the bottle.

Annapolis is actually north of me but that’s the closet place people recognize. Phillipi is who used to do mine when he came to bankshots but he stopped showing up a while back. I did drive up to Severn once to meet up with him but it’s a hike.

It might be time to invest in some equipment. Thanks man.

yep invest in some equipment and do it yourself. you will need a tip, a bottle of glue, and a razor blade, and a piece of sandpaper.
and about half an hour till you get the hang of it.

Once the ferrule surface is clean and ready, spray with an accelerant. Seyberts sells one, I think it's called NCF. Use a drop of CA, not a puddle. Don't wait ten seconds, attach the tip immediately, center and hold for 2 minutes.
