Titanic Thompson -- born in 1893, died at age 80 in 1974. He was probably still doing that 3-rail-kick bet way up in age.
Thx, PT. This is not what I was thinking at all as I thought a pick was after your break you could remove 1 or more balls depending on the spot. I had not seen "the pick" before.
It would be interesting for Dean to comment what he meant and the actual game.

I have seen the 'pick' mean you could spot a ball after the break....you know, the one that leaks out on a bad break.
...the ball spots like you had made it in a wrong pocket.
I've been coast to coast and Gulf to Great Lakes...sometimes you need a translator.
...like if you're giving the orange crush...it means different things in different places.
Androd...I'm interested in hearing another version of "pick".
Up here in Toronto, when someone asks for the '6'...every second person thinks they're getting the 7-8 with it.
In most of the places I have played in Texas, getting the six was just that. Getting the 7 and 8 with the 6 was "getting the 6 out".
At least I'm justified in my confusion.

1hit and the pick means a handicap of 1 ball and the break,but i pick the ball after the break
2 hit and the pick means the break,pick 2 balls after the break

Pool detectives are that breed of pool player/ semi gambler who seldom play them selves but take a perverse
pleasure in knocking*

when pool people gather,what do they do?
The correct answer is "talk"
the pool detective is one of the root causes for this perverted state. of affairs
he explains everything in such a manner that whereas a young man who came in to have fun ,win money and create a legend of his own suddenly becomes ashamed to play for fearing not only losing,but looking stupid
Soon a morbid pallor infects the patrons of the game until no one
plays,no one wins any money and a cynical byproduct turns everyone to league play or bowling
pool halls close,road agents have no where to apply their trade,i think you see the results
I have several methods of actually turning this plague of the pool room
into one of the clever players biggest allies
there are ways i have seen to get that knocking detective to voluntarily leave the pool room and wait in his car ,this is called "damage control"
the knocking detective who actually professes to love the game is in reality the one who kills the game,
he is what i called prelude to disaster
i could tell you a couple of stories of how we used this worthless so called do good er and friend to no one
to actually go get all his money and friends to bet on a sure thing in his expert opinion
This device is called fruit of the poisonous tree
or the "sailing machine"
but you guys are having way too much fun enjoying my greatest defeats

Dean can and will win if he's supposed to. The problem can sometimes be that
he's not supposed to. But that never stopped him. One of the best action men
ever. Doesn't matter what game, pool, golf anything, lets play. Once he comes
in the pool room with a pitching wedge. He says that guy over there plays golf
and is supposed to gamble, I'll say I just got this new wedge and hand it to him.
I can tell by the way he holds it if he can play, I'll try to get him down. I say I'm
in.I told this on here before but is so Dean I'll tell ,it again. I come in the pool room
and Dean says there's Danny Mathews an old player and bookie from the Cotton
Bowling Palace days. Give him the 5 out and the break. Whoa. I say he played
pretty good back at the C.P.. He's helpless says Deano. Race to five $500. I
never shoot at a ball the first set. Dean says we got his nose open now jack the
bet.WHAT?. I feel like I'm in the 7th Cavalry and Custer.'s telling me we got these
Indians right where we want them. Well we double up and Deano was right we
never lose another set. After he quits Deano runs around and gets jelly from
all the rail before they can scoot out the door. Dean never blinked an eye after
that fist set just said jack it up. Like he says, we had the nuts.

no wonder i was so confident
if i had known it was my money i might have pulled up
it helps to know when you bet on the side that your horse can really play
and jack pot could really play
he was however a very weak bettor on the side
he hated to bet on me for the reason he could not understand
how a poor player could ever win
once he pulled up just because i missed the money ball twice on easy shots
after all the good things
my feelings were hurt so i continued to play on my own
it cost me about $500 but everyone said i had heart
everyone but jack
Jack speaks of jelly,perhaps i need to define the term jelly
when you bet on jack and he wins,it is considered good form to
place 10% in jacks hands along with a suitable attaboy
these particular side betters were not familiar with the custom,
so i told them that if they ever bet on me and jack again when we played next time
that we would not play ,they complied with the custom willingly
i hate people to bet on me,fortunately they seldom do
but jack was different jack not only looked good be
played good people always bet on jack
i thought he might give me my money back that time he gave me the 5678 and break,
but he said it was a cheap lesson not to ever play anymore friendly pool
Last story
this same danny matthews brings Bob Hayes the fastest man alive to the pool room
so bob agrees to race anybody in the pool room 100 yard dash
so i negotiate the terms and Bob has to run backwards
so our friend Tony Abbott is still pretty quick on his feet and we agree
Danny Recovered his pool losses and then some
so i took jack cooney to play
but thats another story and i am sleepy
no wonder i was so confident
