To Lag or Not to Lag?

To Lag or not to Lag that is the question!

I am sure this question has been answered before, but I figured I would see what everyone's opinion is on this.

If you are in a Tournament would you rather Lag or flip a coin to see who gets first break?

I like the fact that the Lag takes some skill and goes with the history of pool, but I guess I am nuts cause every tourny I have been going to uses a coin to see who breaks first.

Lag! Let skill be the determinant.

Been to many a tournament that is race to 1 game only. Lose the flip, and if there is a break and run, or 8 on the break, you lose without even having a chance. Your skill never enters into the equation.

At least with lag, if it happens, then you can't whine about it because there's a solution. Learn to lag better. It should be taken as a serious shot, with potentially serious outcomes.

Well I don't think the 8 or 9 on the break should win it either, but that is a whole different topic all together.

I agree that the lag at least test some skill, and makes it more legit than just the fate of a coin toss!
 
Coin Flip

Someone actually voted coin flip! I would love to hear their answer to that one! I wonder if they were just being a smart ass and had to vote differently, or if they really do believe it is better.

Hmmmm, if you're shocked off of your ass that somebody voted for coin flip (yeah it was me) then why did you even start this poll:confused:
 
I prefer the lag.
But in a tourny using coin-op tables, I can understand using the coin.

So why is the coin toss better?
 
Just flip a coin!

Primarily because I'm lazy. I'll lag if there's no coin nearby and there's some other way to score, in which case lagging can be less of a pain than finding a coin...

Sure the lag takes skill but it's kind of peripheral to pool skill. A bit like having a relay race to see who gets the ball first in football. I know that's a really bad analogy for lots of reasons, e.g. there's a second half...

But it ends up being about 50-50 anyway. I don't find it important to reward the guy who put in a lot of hours on the practice table working on his lag.
 
plus, one of the leagues i play in we lag for the break but everytime you go to lag the person you are playing against always insists on taking 3-4 practice lags which is some BS in my opinion

Interesting. In my league, everybody lags, and nobody does this. Once the two payers have each had a chance on the table to warm up for a few (more than 10 is definitely frowned on) shots, you put two balls up on the foot end of the table, and the next shot is the lag. There's no such thing as practice lag.

I've always preferred the lag, because at least it's a contest of skill. Also, after reading about some bar tricks on here, I'm distrustful any time someone else flips a coin.

It's always better to lag, because as already mentioned, it is more skillfull to get the cueball closer to the near short rail, and also it keeps with tradion, but another reason is, simply because it is more professional to have the lag, to decide the break, whereas flipping a coin is leaving it to guessing.
