To Schon or not to Schon

Well what do you guys think. I have heard that laminated shafts (including predator) feel much better with their joint

If feeling like a million bucks is better, yes.
Buy a Schon, and learn One Pocket. You'll thank me later.

Old Schon shafts and joint with micarta ferrules rock.
Good luck in finding one . :D

Oh don't worry I have been! Slowly but surely over the last 8 months or so! I figure I have about 10 more years before I learn some decent moves and traps!

I have no issue going back to good ole reg shafts but it would be nice to at least have both I guess

If you can play with both, that's fine. My experience has been that once you've become accustomed to an LD shaft, it's hard to transition back. This could also mean that switching back and forth could be difficult.
The best combination for me, other than the cues I made and played with, has been a Schon (STL-5) with a Schon/Predator shaft. This a Predator 314-2 shaft with the Schon Logo on it. Looks good. Plays great. A reasonably priced combination. :)

Yeah I'd rather due that and have the traditional Schon joint on the ow I just gotta find one of those shafts and a butt and I'm good to go! If anybody knows of a lead for somebody ooking to sell or trade lemme know! I'm on here and facebook hunting.

Guess I'm just a sucker for the old way. My twenty plus year old custom Schon six window plays just fine with its original shaft. Might be I'm just too old to change. Then again, it all might just be an illusion!

Well its still a Schon isnt it? :grin-square:

DTR,

While in Vegas, I play with a Carmeli Sneaky. Changed the tip, ferrule, joint material and pin. Only things the same as my Schon are the weight and the balance point. If blindfolded, I could distinguish between the two because of the slight "click" sound the Carmeli makes. They play the same! I've played with friends OB, 314, Jacoby and a few others. Also played with a Southwest and a Sugar Tree. All are impressive. All play great. Perhaps it's just ME and the 5" space between my ears that is the real difference. If LD really was the end all, why haven't Schon, Southwest, etc jumped on the bandwagon? Not insulting anyone. Just asking a reasoned question.

Well that depends on how you look at it I guess, most pros use an LD shaft of some kind. I think we can agree on that. Some of them just use the shaft on a different cue. (The Taiwanese almost all exclusively use Southwest, but who knows why.) I think the reality is because the industry much like the oil industry is very slow to change, because there is still so much influence from the previous generations.

^^I think it's also worth mentioning a lot of pros used standard shafts before they got sponsored by a company that has them use an LD shaft. Could be the LD stuff actually makes a difference, or it could be they're just so good they can play with anything. Shane played great pool for a very long time with an old Schon that had a Joss shaft on it, no LD.

Johnny Archer won A LOT OF TITLES with his Schon back in the 90's.

I think a Schon cue with a good LD shaft is a great combo. I have an STL-9 with a Jacoby Edge Hybrid shaft in Schon specific joint and it's a great playing combo.

Also have a Tiger X Pro shaft I just got and have use once on my Schon as well, now that is a good feeling combo! Not sure if it's the shaft, tip or what but it's the best feeling LD shaft I've yet tried. Still unsure about the conical taper though.

Actually, just got back from Schon this afternoon as I had them rewrap my cue in white/black linen. Saw some great old sharp pointed cues in for repair, lots of new ones in various states of completion, etc. There was a beautiful rosewood STL-1 on a rack that was really nice looking.

I love my old Schon and old McDermott. You can't go wrong with either.
