To spot or not

I am having Granito Basalt installed next week and I would like to know the general consensus on putting a spot down or not. I have heard conflicting opinions. It would seem that putting a spot down would do a better job of protecting the cloth. The cloth that I am replacing (Mali) wore a spot out in less than a year (and that was with a spot). The main reason I had that cloth was because that was what I played on in my APA league. Now they have installed Simonis so it was a good time for me to change my home cloth. I had Basalt before and it wore and played very well.

If you think that spot wore out quick, wait till you see what it does to granito without one! We would always recomend one. They are designed to wear out so your cloth does not. Replace it when it shows signs of dippling or just worn. Make sure to use a good quality spot, not the ones that come in cue repair kits from sears!!!

Thanks for the reply. I have been using Master spots. Don't know if there is something better I should use. The pool room that I have my league matches in never puts down spots. How often do spots need changing? I am probably playing in the neigborhood of 10 hrs a week right now. And I always hate pulling off worn spots. I hate the feeling of pulling the cloth.

learn something new everyday, I personally don't like spots on worsted cloth.

I'd much rather wear out the spot vs the felt!

I'd much rather wear out the spot....every time you break the balls it's going to rub the area directly under that head ball in the rack and eventually wear out whatever is there. The Master spots work pretty good and they aren't very expensive either :)

LOL, most of the places I do work at and the home tables I work on would have to be recovered every month or two if they did not use spots. It is ok if all you do is play straight pool or one pocket. But if you do any kind of hard breaking you will wear the cloth out fast. I could not imagine the tables in the tournament room at Hard Times with out spots. I would be recovering them every month. Use a spot unless you just like to play your mechanic every few months. Im sure he would not mind.

I think they actually adhere a whole lot better on worsted then a woolen blend. Have you tried the spots that come from simonis? Are you just marking with a pencil?

I am with Donnie on this one. I do not like them and never will. I leave it up to the customer. Most of the time they want them.

I especially don't like the ones from simonis, there too thick. I use masters spots. My personally tables don't have spots. I notice more wear on the breaking side of the table.
What about setting up tables with a sardo racks?

I am a "NO SPOT" guy on my home tables. I use white & black pencil to mark the tables. There is wear, however I prefer that over the hills of adhesive. I guess in a pool room they are a necessity.

Here is a question for installers. Have you guys ever thought of getting somebody to make spots with your company name on it? I have thought about it several times, but never looked into it. I think this would be a great advertisement, for us. Maybe Glen could help us out with this. He seems to have alot of contacts. If anybody knows who can do this for us. Give me a shout. I would do it.
Thanks, LCCS
