today's run

i posted this in the high run forum but thought i'd post it here too since the 14.1 form is kinda slow...

i set up my favorite break ball this morn and ran 71. got rack six open but the evil 12, 14 and 15 striped balls went to the rail and back into the rack. here's what i was looking at to continue my run. i probably should have used less draw and more power but i was getting conservative. the five won't go even with a carom off the 13 because of the 12 ball. i went for broke and tried a thin cut on the two. maybe i should have tried to carom the two off the six. oh well....

oh almost forgot.... i did this run using a WALMART CUE. lol.... actually it's a cue pieced together from two wally cues, one made out of fiberglass and the other wood. i put the fiberglass shaft on the wood butt and sanded all of the ugly paint off of them. i then painted and stained the butt but left the shaft bare fiberglass. it plays fine......

Looks like you almost had a 14-15 combo to carom off the 11 to make the 3... almost. Good shooting.

thanks pro: maybe i gave myself a loose rack. too late now. but the end of that run is no big deal. my goal right now is not to run a lot of balls but to have more consistent runs and easier patterns which will lead to high runs.

i can't remember why i thought that the 14-15-3 (?) wouldn't go but it's impossible to see the shots clearly in this picture. studying the rack and finding a shot that is not immediately obvious is one of the great joys of this game.

Couldn't you have spun the 2 ball in? Or banked the 10 back up? The 2 would've opened up everything. The 10 probably would've kicked the 11 and 3. Hard to tell if the 2 was make-able in the pic.

Ron: i tried the 2ball and hit it thick. the 10ball bank may have brought my cue back to center table without disturbing the rack.

i was disappointed to watch the balls go to the left rail then back towards the rack without leaving an open ball but no big deal. like i said, my main concern is the ease with which i run racks not so much breaking my high-run record. if i begin shooting hail marry shots then i know i'm out of sync.

Great run.

71....... you can not complain about that, Great run.
The only shot that I saw was. Cue ball off the 6 & then into the 3 but the
11 might be in the way. It is hard to tell.
Remember a Safety, after a run like that is as good as any pro can due. Plus, practicing safeties is as good as practicing pocketing balls but I know it is a hard thing to do after a great run like that.
Nice playing.

thanks straightman..... that's good advice. sometimes i actually do play a safety for practice at the end of a run. i probably should do it more often because i play alone all the time since i moved to the country. but i recently bought a home in florida so hopefully there will be lots of transplanted straight pool players from the east coast down there.

i noticed that you are in dallas. did you know john mcchesney?

Yes

Yes, I knew John very well. He was very well respected & a gentlemen.

i used to play straight with mcchesney at the clicks on alpha. he was nice enough to show me some things when i was just learning the game. i moved way out to the country and lost touch. about a year ago, i googled his name and was saddened to learn of his death. i can't find the page now but it had a pic of him in his high school football uniform.

way back when, clicks had free pool from 11am to 3pm. it was amazing. it drew all the pool addict misanthropes like me.....
