TOI Question: I've studied the TOI PPV and ordered the DVD and like my results.

The question: Do you use TOI for banks shots and if so how is does it work?

I believe CJ covered how to bank balls using TOI shot line up. He goes on to explain that for banking he pivots the cue (BHE) and then follows straight thru the QB.

John, thanks. Did you get that info from PPV or the DVD?

PPV. I couldnt wait for the DVD.

I have to go back and watch the PPV again, this will make the 5th time. I'll see what chapter and time he mentions this and post back.

TennesseJoe,

You can definitely use TOI for bank shots. I just made a rather difficult full table back bank on the eight for a win last night. Naturally it would depend on the type of bank as to how one would employ the TOI.

I believe what John was referring to regarding CJ & the BHE is how CJ starts everything out from the TOI perspective & then the pivot is how he applies outside spin which can certainly be used when banking certain shots.

Before TOI, I woud probably only have come close on the back bank I made last night or I would have decided to shoot it another way to another pocket.

The 8 was about 3/4 of a diamond off the long rail & a little less then 1/4 inch off the foot rail with the cue ball just off the short rail point by the pocket I was banking back into. I hit it low with the TOI. The difference, FOR ME, is that I 'aimed' much more full than I ever would have before TOI because I am now focused more on the CB squirt/deflection.

Before TOI I was focused on the spin/swerve. Before TOI I would have tried to hit that bank softer & swerve the cue ball & try to use spin to hold back the angle the 8 comes off the rail and rolls with. Usually this shot, when hit with spin is going to double kiss or hit the long rail & must be hit with pocket speed for it to be made. Last night I thought of & used the Squirt/Delfection to get a different angle of hit on the 8 which also takes the CB out of the way. The 8 slamed into the pocket of the 9' Centenial with 2 week old 760 Simonis cloth.

The TOI allows the Squirt/Deflection to be a tool to also utilize the collision throw instead of them being thought of as 'problems'.

I hope this helps & gives you some food for thought.

Regards to You &

I would not call CJ's TOI an aiming system. It is a total style of playing that requires an 'aim' that fits the technique. He uses a system of 'aiming' that uses I think 4 parts on each side of center plus center of the cue ball to align with either the center or edge of the cue ball.

I am not using his way of 'aiming'. I am still using my equal & opposite portion of overlap 'aiming'. I have put aiming in single quotes because that word can be very subjective. When I am shooting with english my cue stick is not aiming at the contact point on the OB but parallel or even a bit more outside. I think appropriate alignment would be a better phrase than the words 'aim' or 'aiming'

Just more food for thought.

They are simple to show, but challenging to write down without diagrams.

Yes, I show my bank system in the 'Ultimate Pool Secrets', and, as a matter of fact I taught the TOI Bank System to a gentleman from Dallas last night.

After about 30 minutes into the lesson the guy said "this is like cheating!" He made banks several times in a row that he said he'd never made. If anyone wants I'll have him write a testimonial, I'm sure he would like to. ;)

The Tips align to the diamonds (aligning the cue ball/object ball "center to center") - banking "cross side" a tip is equal to a "one diamond angle".

Two Tips is equal to a two diamond angle and this is where the "transition" point also occurs where you can switch to Center/Edge on your alignment.

Banking these shots the length of the table requires 50% of the tip ratio. One diamond is a half a tip, two diamonds is a full tip.

I could try to explain more, but you get the general idea. I've learned how challenging it is to explain these advanced systems in writing. They are simple to show, but challenging to write down without diagrams.
