I heard it from a good source that Jerry Slivka is going to be at the Glass City Open this year. He's never been afraid to step up to the plate; action-wise, that is. One thing for sure, the Glass City Open attracts a wide variety of player types: Hall of Famers, veterans, roadsters, aspiring players, local champions, Canadian surprises, and unknown entities.
The ballroom will have tournament matches going on until late in the evening. However, in the past years, they did leave it open just about all night, maybe shutting it down an hour or two for cleaning purposes for the next day.
Some players do elect to leave if they find a game of stakes that piques their interest, so that they can be assured the duration of the match-up. There is a pool room within a 15-minute drive of the Clarion Hotel, as I recall.
The funniest proposition last year was when a local said he'd bet anybody they couldn't run three balls in a row on the front table in the lobby, but the only stipulation was that they had to use his cue stick to do so. Watching the players attempt to do it was hilarious, the facial expressions of it all, especially the looks of disbelief when the ball wouldn't drop in the hole. The stick, of course, was a gaff cue. If I only had a video camera....
The biggest beat of the event was Fabio Petroni taking down the colorful Dennis Hatch after a heated bark-fest during the wee hours of the morning. The Hatchetman did most of the talking, while Fabio listened intently, waiting, and hoping to hear what he wanted. After 20 minutes of non-stop grandstanding, a local railbird couldn't stand it anymore. He rose from the bleachers and said, "I'll back Fabio for whatever he wants." The game ensued, with the Italian fox catching his prey.
