What I meant to say was Tom Mcgonagle is a columnist. :grin-square:

Tom came by for a visit at my house today and we were talking some about our respective paths into and around pool. Turns out Tom has written a number of pool related columns, all of which sounded really interesting and funny. He brought me a copy of his book, "Right On Cue" that I'm looking forward to reading.

We went down to the dungeon for a while and Tom worked with me on my game and, in particular, my break. Implementing Tom's suggestions will take a little getting used to - it was like a war zone down there for a little while. A few close calls and one shattered-glass casualty. Did I mention, I don't break softly. :eek:

And, by the way, Mr. Mcgonagle definitely has game. I can confirm that it wasn't a fluke that he won the recent BCA National 8-ball Seniors division in Vegas. And three previous New England 9-ball championships. :thumbup:

It was real pleasure meeting and getting a chance to hit some balls with him.

Tom shoots great, but I think he took second in the BCA Seniors.
 
Tom has a different way of teaching. Sort of like my father used to teach stuff (he was a depression- WWII guy). That is, here is the right way to do this because I have the experience. You can do it your way, but this is the right way. I took lessons in Tom's basement in the late 80's when I really, really, caught the pool bug. He taught me things that brought me from a very low D to at my best a B. He taught me things that I really wouldn't understand until I got...experience. Then, when I played tournaments and got experience, I finally put it together.

He also wrote many columns for "All About Pool". I even serialized the beginnings of his book.

Tom is one of those guys that I am glad I had the privilege to call a friend. He is above all else a stand up guy. Owning a pool room and running the All About Pool tours I got to know lots of those guys. Tom's personal honor system is something that this game, and many of those players, would have been better off to emulating. It annoys me to no end when I see people on this site worshiping guys that were/are frankly dirt bags. Tom would call a foul on himself even if it meant losing a match. Like I said, a stand up guy. And, he never, ever quits until the game is over.

I'm doing an internal thing now where I kind of want to work on my game, but life keeps getting in the way. I plan on taking lessons from Tom again because he laid a solid foundation. Now, even though I am an old bastard, I think he can bring me back to a B. Maybe even get me back in a few Joss events.

And, yes, he did in fact win the Senior Division.

Well Brian,

It's nice to meet someone that spells as poorly as I do.

Yesterday was an adventure. The total distance I drove was close to three hundred miles. It wasn't all back and forth to Connecticut. I got home and drove to Peabody Mass. last night to play in my league. I had a bad night but my teammates picked me up and we won the session 11-2.

I can confirm, "I did win the Seniors Event. I have the plaque I ran over with my car to prove it. (LONG STORY.)

Bob, Thanks for all the kind things you said about me. I try my best to do the right thing when it comes to the game of pool.

I've managed to try and experiment with a lot of different things in my life. I tell people, "I do a lot of things, half-ass."

I wish I could drive around the country and travel the world meeting all the different people on the forum. Yesterday, I set the limit on the distance I'll travel, for now. If your not closer than 136 miles from Billerica, Massachusetts, you have to travel to my home.

Well if you ever get the urge to visit Bar Harbor, or go see where Stephen King lives, or come see a game at the Senior League World Series, or visit a "casino" that's slot's only, throw out a yell. I'd love to meetcha!

That's what you get for thinking!!:D It was all over AZ when our own Tom M. took it all down! Great job Tom, and he's a super nice guy to boot.
