I cut the core out of the 1.5 inch rod with an 11/16" hole saw with a 1/4 inch pilot before boring it for butt caps and save the plug for ferule material. If you have any 1.5" butt stock you may give it a try. A 5/8 hole saw may work depending on the diameter of the ferule you need.
