Tonkin Cue in the Works

Will queue for cues

Well, Pete Tonkin will be starting on my new cue soon so I figured I'd share a little bit of the design with my fellow boardmates. The main inlay will be my take on the propellor inlay spiced up with some silver and the butt sleeve will also feature my take on veneered boxes/windows. I'll wait to show the butt sleeve until closer to delivery! The materials will be amboyna, ebony, ivory (except for veneers) and silver with an elephant ear wrap.

Here's the forearm mockup:

Thanks, I think this is the best design a cuemaker and I have come up with to date! That said, I should reiterate that this is just a Photoshop mockup I did of what the cue will look like. The cue hasn't really been started yet.

Them propellers are the nuts

I agree. When Pete suggested the silver inlays and I mocked it up my draw dropped...lol. Of course that's the way they should be. Here's a little better view of the inlay design:

Though, to give credit where it's due, Jimbo was the first to suggest inlays inside the propeller! Thanks Jim for all of your input.

Another suggestion would be to have the sides of the inlays curved like a tiffany diamond. Sort of like the inlays in this James White. The sliver inside the ivory looks incredible on Pete's cues.

You will not be disappointed working with Pete... his communication is fantastic. He just finished up a cue for me and has it at the ICCS right now... can't wait to get it.

Knew I have seen them before

True, I love that cue and though I was a little sad that it was so close to "my idea"...lol.

It's close, but not the same. And the silver inside will give it a completely different, and more 3-D look.

Who is this Jimbo you speak of?

Nice design... Pete does amazing work.

<~~~~~ thinks this cue needs a little purpleheart burl for a proper thank you

Love the design . One small thing I thing the proportion of the propeller is a little off IMO . I would like to see it streched just a little length wise. Wish I had jumped on the Tokin wagon . Jamies cue is mind blowing.

I have found that on just about all my ivory inlays, diamonds, spears, peacocks, etc., that I prefer them to be scalloped. It just makes them leaner and sexier to me. The ones on that JMW are no different as far as their appeal.

Chris.

Your cue will be beautiful.

In the last couple of years, Pete has established himself as one of the top cuemakers on the planet.

Congrats,

I agree. There are a few other propeller designs that are similar, the JMW and Showman come to mind, but I've not seen anything exactly the same as my design. Then with the silver on top of that I think it's still pretty unique. I am also a huge fan of the scalloped/Tiffany style inlays.

I've never seen Purple Heart burl but if it exists I'd like to see it!

Thanks. I played around a bit with lengthening the design and I'm not 100% sure what to think. I think I'm going to do a mockup of the extended design and then talk to Pete to get his thoughts. The JMW propeller is definitely longer than mine by a bit.

It's not too late to jump on the band wagon!

Thanks to everyone who has commented. I'm really excited about this project!

Really, really nice original design. I love the wood choices as well. I'm looking forward to seeing your design for the butt. After seeing the box cue that Pete made for Dean (deanoc), I look at everything that he's involved in.
