i just finished watching the 1993 u.s open and saw this guy named Tony Ellin play flawlessly in a win over Mike Sigel. What happened to Tony Ellin?

Tony unfortuantely passed away as a result of an auto accident. I think its been roughly 7-8 years perhaps. My time frame may be off.

I was thinking about Tony just the other day when someone brought up the subject of who had won some of our tournaments in the past. Tony was a great guy with a lot of game. He left a lovely wife and I think a young daughter. :( He is still remembered.

From speaking with friends that knew him, he was a great talent and a wonderful guy. A shame when the good ones are taken early.

R.I.P. Mr. Ellen

Tony got hit by a train when crossing the tracks in his car. Very good player, very nice guy. No telling how far he would have went in professional pool. He had one of the best breaks in pool and a all around great game to top it off. His longtime girlfriend Shelby was also a good player. Never heard what happened to her.

This is something I wrote about my friendship with Tony Ellin and it has been on this site for quite some time.

Remembering A Friend

Tony hit the balls harder than any anybody past or present and he always got out - nothing fancy - just a good guy that shot flawlessly. I miss him a lot.

You are right on Chris. Tony was hit by a train in his car less than a mile from his home. He must have been distracted when the accident occurred because he crossed that track every time he left his home and the trains were going pretty fast through that area.

His wife, Shelby, has recently remarried to a local man who runs a large APA league in the Charleston area and they are doing fine along with Tony's daughter.

I'll never forget how close Tony came to winning the US Open on ESPN playing Earl Strickland. Tony made one position error and had to kick and Earl came back and beat Tony in the US Open finals. I live in Charleston, SC where Tony lived and started playing pool and he took to the game like a natural. One of my friends who ran a pool room (he's passed away now) helped Tony a lot when he was learning the game at his pool room.

He was a great guy and like one of the other posters said there is no way to tell how far he would have gone in professional pool with his talent. He used to give some of the wildest spots just to get a game you ever heard of and usually always won. He will be missed by many people.

Tony

Wow!! That's a big news for me. I didn't know that he past away 7 years ago. He's a really great player.

Tony was the pro player who was seen MORE number of times on ESPN in 1994.In 1994 he was ranked # 3 in PBT rankings.year 1994 was pinnacle for Tony.
Another relative of Shelby also was killed at the same level crossing gate where Tony got killed.

Tony was a cool guy! I remember playing him in Myrtle Beach back in 1999 with Weenie Beenie watching our match. He was gracious, kind, and unstoppable. When he broke the balls, the walls shook.

It was a sad day indeed when Tony passed away. Here are some photos I took of Tony in May of 2000, just a month or so before he passed:

The local florist said that that many flowers had not been ordered for a funeral since the Charleston had mayor passed away a while ago.
