Defending his BCA Open title, Tony Robles is on ESPN2, right after the commercial break.! :p

Can't wait to hear what he has to say! This is pretty cool! :)

Geez, too bad I am at work.

So far, they have given Tony about 7 seconds of air time in a preview, doing a trick shot. Another commercial has occurred, and still no Tony.

Standing by and staying tuned...

I'm glad that you're there to give all of us at work a play-by-play. Thanks a bunch JAM!

Waiting patiently through all the dribble about baseball and football, the anchor man goes, "And a trick shot on the pool table. Dana is warming up."

Another 7-second preview of Tony Robles doing yet another trick shot before another commercial break.

Since it's 12 minutes before the conclusion of the show, this is going to be it. Tony Robles on ESPN "Cold Pizza."

Standing by and staying tuned.

Neatly dressed in what looked to me like an Italian brown silk shirt with tailored slacks, Tony Robles was front and center on ESPN2 this morning.

When asked if the BCA Open was like the "Super Bowl of pool," Tony responded that, in fact, yes, the BCA Open is a great event which is presented each year by the Billiard Congress of America, and other "Super Bowl of pool" tournaments are the U.S. Open and the World Pool Championship.

He then set up a trick show for Dana, one of two anchors standing alongside the pool table, and, of course, Dana made four balls with one shot, thanks to Mr. Robles! ;)

There was a footer on the bottom of the television screen which read "Billiard Basics," as Tony was demonstrating to Dana how to hold the bridge properly. After a few pool tips, Tony stated with assuredness that he's on his way to Las Vegas and plans on winning that BCA Open once more.

Good luck to Tony Robles in Vegas, and it sure was great seeing one of pool's finest representatives on the telly! :)

JAM, you could make a funeral procession sound like a Christmas party. You liked the shirt. Inside Pool, April 05, page 36. I thought he might have borrowed it off Efren.
Tony was demonstrating to Dana how to hold the bridge properly. Yeah right, he told her to make a fist. I really enjoy your reporting but I think you were off base here. Worse than a B rated movie gal. You know I love ya kid. Nice try anyway.

Hi, Don! :) I was happy to see POOL even included on ESPN2 in a real-time setting, and who better to represent the sport than Tony Robles!

Recently, Mike Massey appeared on Regis. I know Mike Massey's personality from seeing him live at various exhibitions, and I didn't think he got a chance to be all that he could be in the short 7- or 8-minute segment they devoted to his appearance.

The same thing with this "Cold Pizza" show relates to Tony Robles. They gave him a short segment to do his thing, and there's not much anybody can do with 7 or 8 minutes. A few trick shots and some billiard basics beats a blank.

With the launch of the BCA Open in Vegas imminent, Tony Robles' appearance does help to put pool out in the limelight, however short a period of time he received. This year, pool gets 7 or 8 minutes on the tube. Next year, maybe a 20-minute segment will be in order.

You gotta crawl before you walk, and pool may be rising in popularity before our very eyes. Time will tell.

Hi again, I think short 7 or 8 minute spots like the one this morning do more harm than good. I just don't think pool is ever going to work on TV. You really have to get in the pit to appriciate the game. Most people today arn't willing to put in the time to learn how to play the game. It takes skill and practice to become a decent player. I don't see it happening anytime soon. I hope I am wrong.
Don

Pretty interesting thread. Surely, pool getting some attention is better than it getting no attention.

Pool players, of course, would like to have the kind of status that other people on Cold Pizza have, meaning that they're of interest to the casual viewer even when not dislaying their professional skills, but that's a reputation pool players as a group haven't yet earned.

Still, when they get chances like these, if they dare to turn on their personalities and show some charisma and/or sex appeal, they can inch closer to being recognized as compelling personalities worth taking a closer look at. Once they draw attention to themselves, they draw attention to their sport.

It won't be easy, but pro pool players need to use opportunities like these to make themselves and pool look cool. Cold Pizza is a show that focuses on the lighter and cooler side of sports, and everytime a pool player appears on this show, they have access to the young demographic, so it's a great opportunity.
