If I see Helena Thornfeldt take one more practice stroke I think I'm going to vomit. I mean, how many practice strokes do you really need for a good preshot routine? If anything she is messing herself up I believe. You CAN take too long on a shot.

At one point, I think I counted like 23 practice strokes!! I mean DAMN!!

There is a guy that plays at a low level tournament that I go to that does the same damn thing. Takes about 18-20 practice strokes in twos...irritates the heck out of me. At least Helena hits the right speed and usually makes her shots. The guy I speak of hits really hard and misses a lot, often badly.

I guess that's why it's a low level tournament though...so shmucks like me and him can play.

Not only does he take a lot of strokes, he also tends to take a long time making up his mind. A lot of times he'll stay down long after the shot, like 10-15 seconds, because he screwed up. When it's his turn at the table, he'll sometimes take 20 seconds before even getting off his stool.

I remember when Helena had a nice loose stroke and when she would not take all those practice strokes. She was on top of her game. Monica Webb was trying to emulate Helena's stroke. Now I think that Helena is emulating Monica's stroke.
ruk

The way she plays now annoys the bejeesus outta me...I can't watch her play...or I'd hurt her....LOLz...that short jabby stroke is going to be her downfall....

I think Kim Davenport strokes a lot too but they are of beauty.
I've watched Kim play a lot and he never takes too many strokes like that. When a player takes an excessive amount of practice strokes, it shows a lack of confidence and trust in their stroke.

There is such a thing as too many practice strokes. The longer you take on a shot the more opportunities you have for negative thoughts to creep in. In golf they teach you to only take a couple of practice swings as well.

John Daly said that "once you have figured out what you want to do, all you are doing afterwards is thinking about how you can miss the shot". This is true for pool as well. Decide how to play your shot, get down, three to six practice strokes and fire away.
