I remember how excited Ray was about his "new" book when it came out in the mid 1970's. It was an immediate success and I remember buying my first copy from Ray himself in about 1978.

Ray was not just one of the most knowledgeable players in the golden age of straight pool, but he was also one of the classiest. He and Allen Hopkins had one of the better rivalries ever seen in American pool. If memory serves, they met in the final of the World Straight Pool Championship in both 1977 and 1978, with Hopkins winning in 1977 and Ray winning in 1978.

Ray's book has easily stood the test of time. In that period, it was certainly of comparable quality to "Mastering Pool" by George Fels and "The Standard Book of Pool and Billiards" by Robert Byrne, and all three are deservingly called classics.

I have the cue on the cover from the original book. I verified that with Ray on the phone. We spoke for a hour once. Super nice guy, that was a very special call for me. I got that book in 80-81 I’m guessing.

Somebody on YouTube just asked me if I posted this video on Ray Martin's Birthday on purpose. I honestly didn't know, but I'm glad I got lucky. I hope Ray likes his birthday present.

The Criticalest Critical shots?

At 3:13, there appears to be a discontinuity in the lesson: just prior there is a throw shot, then the video suddenly jumps to the 30 degree/peace sign rule.

... more like: "10 of the Most Interesting of the Critical Shots."

I decided to run the rest of the balls after the throw shot and the peace sign came in handy. I don't see any crime in that.

My opinion it is the best book for the money and Ray is a great player in his own right. There are a couple of video clips on Youtube with him playing Cory Duel and Efren Reyes at a 8-ball professional event some years ago. Nothing fancy but he gets the job done.
