Top 10 Things You Need to Know about THROW

3 eights inch gap

For me, the take away highlight from your videos is the 3/8" gap between balls demonstration. Very good to know. All of what you demonstrated is kind of instinctive to me after shooting balls for over 50 years. Very good demos as to why and how.

Agreed. That's one of my favorite principles of pool. It helps to know what can be done easily when the gap size is smaller, close to, or greater than this magical amount.

Most good players have a solid feel for most throw effects, but I've seen exceptions. For example, some players think more spin always gives you more SIT. Many players mistake a "normal amount of throw" for "cling/skid/kick" and blame the miss on "bad contact." Some players don't over-cut small-gap combos enough to compensate for throw. Some players don't over-cut soft stun shots enough at times.

Very good demos as to why and how.
Thanks.

Maybe a little off topic

I picked up the use of throw many years ago by practicing the same shot over and over again and then adding different cue ball spins. Your videos did an excellent job of explaining why my practice ended with these results. It also explains why I have less misses when my cue ball speed is higher. Thanks again for great videos but there is a lot of material to understand so maybe the second video will be seen later.

A few questions.

Does table cloth play a part in the throw effects (ie 760, 860, Ultra)??

How about condition of the balls such as greasy from use? Or maybe grade of ball?

One final question which ties into one of your last videos.

When you get into your stance to shoot a shot and you decide to change from bottom to max side spin, do you get out of your stance and reposition or do you just adjust with the cue???

Why wait? The 2nd video is already available. These are the types of videos that might require multiple viewings to absorb everything.

No. See the answer to the 2nd-to-last question here:

answers to questions about throw

How about condition of the balls such as greasy from use?
Yes. How the balls are cleaned can also have a big effect. See the video and other info here:

ball cleaning and surface treatment effects on throw

Or maybe grade of ball?
I don't think so, but I have not tested this.

You should not be making major changes like this while down in your stance. The proper thing to do is to get up and start over, making sure you have everything planned and figured out before you get down.

Hi Dave...

First off your video is great as always...

Throw is very important in pool... & I think you are also correct in saying that throw will appeal more to the
advanced player... most novice players only are looking for something simple or easy to learn.

Mosconi... once told a friend of mine that other then position (controlling the cue ball) that throw has to
be understood completely IF you want to have HIGH runs in straight pool... over the years I learned he
was right... one other thing he said was that throw will take effect up to approx. gap of 1/8-1/4 inch...
He said if you go by the using credit card as distance would be good!!

Lastly... I think your TOP 10 series is great!!

I've also noticed in my local league that lack of a complete understanding of throw effects is also an issue in 8-ball, even with some decent players.

Lastly... I think your TOP 10 series is great!!
Thanks! These "Top 10" videos are getting a lot more views than my older stuff, so I think I've finally discovered the type of content and presentation style most people seem to like.

Thanks for the comments and feedback,
Dave
