Tournament format question...

If you were going to play in a tourny, which format would you prefer and why.

32 Players
Single Elimination
Races to 7, Best 2 out of 3 Sets
Rotate Break

or

32 Players
Double Elimination
Races to 9
Rotate Break

I think I would rather play in the double elimination game with races to 9. Gives every single person a more than fair shot at taking home some hardware. Also, you have to plan for every single match to go the entire 3 sets of 7, since it is a possibility that it could happen. I've never played in a tournament with that much time at the table, but I think I would get fatigued and lazy if I had to go 3 sets of 7 as many times as it would take to win..
 
Prefer the first option for 8 ball and the second for 9 ball.

Reasons purely selfish as personally am more competent at 8 ball than 9 ball and consider first option to be very clearly more likely to result in the better player progressing as far as he can:)

I left out something about the tourny. It is a 32 player field, so after the first round the field is cut in half. Second round, half again and so on... if you use the first format. The second format seems like it would take longer and contribute to fatigue much more.

Thoughts?

Poll your closest prospects, have the event. Poll again at the event. Make adjustments. Poll your players again at the next event. I like to think "I" had something to do with the format, and I believe others do to.;)

I personally favor single elimination. If I lose an early match, much less time spent sitting around waiting for my next match.

Thanks Ray, Your imput makes sense. I have already decided what to use. I wanted some outside the box thoughts to see if anyone knew or had a preference for formats.

It really depends on the field. If it's a seeded tournament, having single elimination isn't so bad. If it's a random draw, double elimination balances out bad draws (two highly favored players facing off early).

However, I will say this - If there's one thing I don't like, it's playing the same format over and over again. Mixing things up from tournament to tournament is always a good thing, IMHO.

I'm glad you guys took the time to give me your views. May I add that, it is a $200 buy-in 9-ball tournament. Which format works the best for the players?

One thing that I have learned about pool players in my 40+ years of playing, it that pool players NORMALLY don't like CHANGE.

Keep things simple and easy to understand and the majority of the pool players I've known are happy or for the most part not *****ing as much.

I like different formats for different game. Round Robin for 14.1 and One Pocket.

All the other games... DE, SE are just fine... But I like Round Robin the most. You get to play everyone at least once.

I use RR in the 14.1 league, everyone plays twice a session. I am going with SE, it makes for a one day tournament. I have yet to learn One Pocket. From what I've heard and read, it seems like a good game to learn. lol As if we ever learn them. Thanks for putting things in focus.
