Tournament handicaps

Book collector thanks for your response. I agree 100%. I was just wondering what others thought. Some people think because it is a short race anyone can win. I think this is completely incorrect. I am a c player. I can beat Filler or SVB one game given enough chances. But what are the chances I will beat either one twice in my life time let alone twice in one race to two.
Tournament here has same two or three players winning every week.

In addition there is some funny stuff going on with the calcutta.
 
I have never played in a league. But have played small and large tournaments since the 80s and directed hundreds of them. The most successful non handicapped tournaments were short races with fairly low entry fees. With higher entry fees the weaker players want handicaps. But with lower entry fees they looked at it kind of like league night without the commitment to be there every time. If I were to open another pool room I would probably run short race tournaments with $10 entry fee and no handicap.
I know of a room now that runs short even races, but they give a bonus to the top female every week. Even though it is rarely a female who wins, the director told me they get a lot of women players. Sounds like a good formula and they are getting dozens of players.
