Tournaments and Leagues

I can not figure out why people play APA and not tournaments.
They show up and pay their dues and leave with a chance of winning
nothing. We had a handicapped 8 ball tournament on Monday nights
and the bar matched the pot. If a player continued not to finish in
the money then we would keep dropping their handicaps until they
could. Point is everyone there stood a chance to win something.
Well the APA opened a Monday night league and our tournament died
after 7 years . We now charge no entry and pay 100,50 and 25.
We are getting a few players now but still nothing like league night.
We have an in house BCAPL league and like last year it did not cost
me a dime to play (owner sponsored my team) and we won a trip
to Vegas and money to go and stay a week. I can see playing in this
and even last place gets some money. But as it has been brought up before
why in the world are people paying APA dues to win nothing. I dont get it.
Forgive me if I offended anyone because that is not my intention.

I am a BCAPL league operator. I play in tournaments when ever I can. I understand your point about playing in tournaments over leagues to an extent. I believe that league play forces a commitment to play on that particular night. It sounds like you have a great place to play with the owners adding money and sponsorships. As for the APA, while it's not for me their structure is appealing to new players and allows better players to play with their less competitive friends. I believe that ANY league is a great way to meet new pool playing friends. Tournaments tend to be a little less social and even with a handicap format it will still deter the newer players. Congrats on winning the trip to the BCA in Vegas!! Nothing better that in my opinion.

The same people are usually in the money in tournaments. Look at the pro tournaments. Look at the US open. 256 people sign up. You can pick the final 16 before it starts.
In the local tournaments who makes the handicaps. If the top players have to give up too much weight then they won't play.
If a 2 in the apa has to play a 7 each week the 2 will eventually stop playing. Many weekend warriors think the handicap system will help them. A true 3 against a true 5 may be a fair match. But a true 2 or 3 against a run out player has no chance. Many players don't understand this so they keep coming back.
I think the apa serves its purpose as a social gathering for someone who wants that one night out. It is great for the lower level players if they play each other.

You are talking about two completely different mind-sets, so far as players go. The person who is interested in playing in a tournament is interested in playing to see how good he is as a player, and to try and get better. Playing better opponents will make you play better, we all know this.

The typical league-only player isn't that driven. They are out to have some fun playing pool. They may not have time to do both, so if it's one or the other, and they enjoy league more, that's what they should do. No harm in that, if that's all they are after. And they are supporting the pool rooms, for the most part. They are important, too.

Many of us can do both, leagues and tournaments. Don't think less of those who aren't interested in doing what it takes to improve, so long as they are having fun and aren't complaining about not getting better. They're pool players, too, just not like you or I.
