Tournaments Requiring MORE than ? Entry, Green Fees, or Feed the Bar Box?

Friend call me last night to share his latest Pool adventures, apparently he went to a Bar tournament the other night that was advertised for a $5.00 Entry Fee. Yes he was aware he would have to split the Bar Box Fee for Each Game Played.

but he was also Told by the tournament Director, if he did not spend Money on Food & Drink he was ineligible to Win any the 1st., 2nd., or 3rd. place Money Pot.

Is this customary, or out of the ordinary, as I personally have never run into this situation???

What a great way to weed out the water drinking hustlers! I've never heard of it, but I'm guessing every room owner would consider it as viable.

I spend money where I am, as I appreciate the owners' place, time, and equipment, and the tourney....and I usually want a nice cool beer and a place to sit when I play. It's a valuable trade for me.

Before, although most serious tournament places do not do that, usually some local bar. I played in a $10 tournament last night, race to 1 8 ball,
DE, .75 a game tables, and you got a chit for a free well dring or beer. It wes free with the $10 entry fee, not a special thing, a regular thing. Plus they are going to a 200% payback next week (from 150%).
 
I do not Drink at Tournments, until I am Done Playing. My favorite Spot is Metro Sports in PHX, as they have Great Qasadesia's, and Cold Beer. I limit myself to (1) Beer becasue a DUI is too expensive to get.
 
i play in a small bar tourney once a week. 5 dollars. no big money, but always a lot of fun. no requirement for food or anything, although i normally go through a few cokes while i'm there.

last week the TD/owner of the bar decided to give all the players a pizza. great idea since EVERYBODY playing ordered a drink after that. i think he plans to keep it up too

I have never heard of any pool rooms doing this. I UNDERSTAND why they would. Its difficult to make any money when you are paying out 125% of entry fees back into a tournament. Most the time the owners just want to break even to encourage people to come back and play later where they will make their money. If for instance you have a big tournament and the local AA chapter shows up and orders waters all night. I think you'd go busted. Loitering cost rooms a LOT of money, so you are always trying to get them to spend SOMETHING at least. Its either that or a cover charge for spectators.

Why not just figure the cost of the greens fee and add it to the entry fee. If I had my own room/bar I'd figure the cost of the tourney, greens fees, and then tack on an extra $5 onto the total. Each player would get entry into the tourney and a $5 credit at the bar. Kind of like a 2 drink minimum, because beer would run about $2.50. I'd run drink specials all night, and the players would get happy hour prices all night. It might make the entry $10 or $15 but there'd be added value for the players and the room....

But I don't have a pool room ....... Yet

Well I personally never seen them make you buy drinks or food, but I can see why they would want you too. In Texas they don't really have to force anyone to do that, cause we all love to eat, and most of us like to drink. LOL

Anyway, one place I play tournaments at actually has free food on tournament nights. The beer is cheap too, so they have no trouble getting people to drink while they are shooting. LOL

It is also a little local bar, so the compitition isn't as stiff as if it were in one of the pool halls.

The big tournament down here at Paradise tends to sell more food than drinks. That is because there are real pool players there, playing for big money. The food there is great so they sell a lot of it. I don't think they loose much money when hosting their big tournament every year. Also if you want to watch the tournament you have to pay to get in. I guess he is making money!
 
Hey, whatever works at that place, time, with those players. It's hard enough to keep a tournament alive, IMO.

That said, I prefer to pay everything up front, with nothing to worry about later.

But that's just me.

The local pub has a Saturday night 9 Ball Tournament. $10 entry, race to one, double elimination. The bar owner matches the take so if we have 12 players ($120), he'll kick in another $120. Payouts to 1st, 2nd, & 3rd. Players split the quarters (.50 each).

The players usually bring a girlfriend, or a friend or two with 'em, and there's a bunch of folks who just like to come to sweat the action and drink. The pub is a small place but it gets packed on Saturdays and they move a ton of drinks and food.

Since I can't drink alcohol beverages, I drink O'Douls like a fish and always order food.

I figure hey, if the bar is nice enough to hold the tournament, to provide a perfectly clean table with Simonis 860, and Aramith Super Pro balls (just for league and tournament use), so that I and others can have a fun night of friendly competition.. then the least everyone who participates can do is to make sure it's profitable for the host.

Last week I came in 1st ($140.), the week before that I did the same. Second got $90, and third got $50. Not bad at all for a small local bar tournament.

BTW-for you bar owners one good way to boost the beer and alcohol sales is to put out plates with some Serrano or Prosciutto Ham slices, olives, pepper jack cheese cubes, jalapenos, and saltines. It's not expensive, the customers can't resist, and once they start eating that salty and hot stuff they will be drinking!
 
I run a tournament that matches the pot, $5 entry, open tables. the place gets up to 30-40 players weekly. It's good in numbers that enough players spend money and make up for those who don't. This place has the best food and prices almost impossible for the water drinkers to pass on eating......some place can stock up on bottled water if they want to solve that type of problem.

The notion that "have a tournament and they will come" doesn't work the conditions have to be good. I avoid the high priced bad food places plus I only support the tournament that match the pot or sweeter. The dirty dingy places might be tolerable if the pots are good.
