How come I can play a set for a thousand and play my best pool and win the cash. But in a 60 dollar entry tourney I will feel the heat and dog my brains out. It makes me sick to my stomach!! How can I overcome it?

They aren't really tournaments, and you'd win gambling if you are playing for those kind of stakes. You're for sure out of my league.

Its not hard to figure out...,

I have had the same problem from time to time in tournaments and league. The main reason is the fact that we can gamble as long as I have money, if im down a set or two, no big deal, I'm playing until I win or run out of cash.

But in a tournament or league it two and out! If I don't stay on the winners side until late in the bracket I'm putting my chances at winning the cash in jeopardy and creating undo pressure.

Ask everyone to bet something on every match and you'll play better, you might OFFEND someone, non-betters, just keep a polite apology prepared.

This makes no sense, in fact you contradict yourself. You say that you can get down a couple of sets gambling and you can come back because you still have cash.

If you get down a couple of sets in a tourney, you are out...now because you gambled for those two sets, you've lost that money, also.

There is only a few reasons that a person will play well gambling and not in tourneys:

1. The pressure on oneself is greater during the tourney than gambling...let's face it, some people value the glory over the money and losing in a tourney is right in sight for all to see. Losing some cash is more private.

2. The person only gambles with spots that are not available in the tourney.

3. The tournament structure may not allow a person to keep warm, forcing him to sit and wait in between matches.

My best guess is that, like most gamblers, the OP forgets the times he lost and concentrates on the times he won. He sees himself as being better during gambling sessions and doesn't realize that in actuality he is about as successful in tourneys as he is playing for money.

Or he simply chooses his marks well when gambling.

In a gamblingg session, you can think like a marathoner...
A tournament is like a series of dashes.

Prepare your mind to come out of the gate fast in tournaments.

Hell the opposite is true for me, bet a dollar in a tournament and I develop a hitch in my stroke. Sad day, but I continue to throw $$$$ hoping to get better. At least keep my compadres in the pool hall.

You miss the point...,

Sounds like you have it all figured out..., but either you don't gamble or don't play tournaments?

No one gambles for large sums during matches at a tournament so losing in the tournament when you have bet is just cheap motivation.

There are people who are better at one than the other and losing cash when gambling is not private in most action rooms.

Aside from what pepper sauce just said, which he said very well! Re-evaluate yourself honestly:

Do you hold gambling as a higher form of pool, therefore thinking it should be a cakewalk, perhaps underestimating the challenge?

Are you aware before your match that it might be a shorter race then what you normally play sets for gambling, therefore mistakes are more costly?

Does the atmosphere of tournament play put you out of your comfort zone?

I know what you're going thru as I've been there and still find myself there as well. The best advice is be honest w your performances and come up with a game plan till you find what works.

Gambling sets are you vs the same guy, usually pretty close to ur speed. If you're not a head hunter and just a typical run of the mill gambler looking for only easy action. Then, you will have a hard time playing tournaments. Tournaments increase in opponent difficulty as you move along and sometimes when you lose as well. When you're gambling no one forces you to have to play another set vs a better player even. You get to take ur time and make a game. Tournaments force you to play whoevers next and you play them even. However the risk is small and the payout is in odds. Hope this helps

Gamble less and play more tournaments. And play in tough tournaments against better players (if that option is available to you). Playing in little weekly tourneys where you're the favorite to cash isn't going to help you. Humble yourself and get your ass kicked by better players, without the option to adjust and run it back, until you get sick enough of losing that you're willing to put in the work to fix whatever weakness is keeping you from winning. Playing better players consistently will expose every weakness you have, if you can allow yourself to see it.

Tap tap tap.

Its called being 'externally motivated'!!!!
Dude.... Your signature is freakin huge. Ive got a 27" monitor, but holy hell......

It's a mental thing, with a tournament you have to bring it right then. Gambling you can start slow & still come out on top, provided you're not playing nits that will quit you a set up.

It is a mind set. I never do as well in a tournament as I do in cash games. You have the ability to restructure the game playing cash that isn't open to you in tournaments, and I've found it is a different set of people. Not better, not worse, just different and the cash players fit my personality better and make the game more enjoyable for me,

Different things make different people play poorly

all kind of things take people out of their comfort
since there is so little money in tournaments, and all you do is
show your speed and reduce your chances to win the money
perhaps there is a reason you don't really like the tournaments

some players just use the tournaments to showcase their worse game

Here ya go

"Know Thyself"

Until you know and understand why you get nervous you will never fully come to grips with the problem. Since you're human, I bet what ails you is the same that ails most people. I recommend reading "The Pleasures of Small Motions" to find the answer and start working on a solution. Secondly, play more tournaments. Just like everything in life, it takes practice.

Gambling is good for gambling. It's fun and exciting but it does little to help prepare you for tourney play.

That entry is a wee bit steep for someone my speed who has zero chance of beating anyone in that field. I can go elsewhere and pay 70 to 150 and play a tourney with good short stops and a few champions where, if the draw is right, I might just get lucky, play over my head, and cash.

It's just a couple of $1000 sets and you get to play better players. Additional the action is plentiful at these. All levels.

What you outlined still allows the same problem as the OP mentioned. No challenge. You could still enter in the open division. $50 9 ball.
