I have a cue with an ivory joint and butt cap. Someone told me yesterday that if i were to fly with my cue or have it shipped somewhere that that it would be taken from me. Is there any truth to this statement?
I have two relatively expensive cues, each worth, $2,500+. Both have ivory in the joint, ferule and inlays. I have often traveled with them between Canada and the USA, and it's never been a problem. What worries me the most is the low temperatures or the rapid change in temperature that the cues go through when flying. For that reason alone I would prefer to take a cheaper cue. When i do take the good cues, I package them extremly well, i wrap the cue case in buble wrap and put it in a shipping cardboard box that i tape shut (then i put luxury brand logos on my made up cardboard carying case). Never put your cue case with the luggage, it will disapear, even the cheap cues will never make it to port. (by never i mean sometimes).
Good luck..

In country. You're ok. Outside US borders. Good luck.
Dave said all you need to know!
One other consideration might be the altitude. Airliners fly at plus thirty-thousand feet altitude. It's colder than a witch's you know what up there and since the cargo holds are not heated or pressurized, the ivory butt cap might crack. Especially when the aircraft descends and the atmospheric pressure changes. I think I might opt for shipping also.
Almost all cuemakers who use Ivory have documentation on all their ivory and can show that it is legal. I wouldn't worry about it. Having/owing ivory is not illegal. Illegally obtaining it is.
Sorry to say but most cargo holds are pressurized. The airlines fly live animals and valuable objects all the time in the cargo holds. Also if you priority ship something guess what its going in a plane cargo hold.
