So I'm new to the forum and just started playing competitively and thinking about joining the Tri-state Tour tournaments. Is there anyone that can explain how the rankings work? I'm pretty sure I'll start off as a D player but I'm seeing on their schedule most of their tournaments are A-B/C-D, will that mean I'll have to be playing A and B players as well as people of my own caliber? Or do C and D players only play each other? Thank you for further clarification.

Being a handicapped tournament, it's hard to just believe a random person shows up and is just the lowest handicap, so they normally try to require you to come in much higher than that unless someone can vouch for you.

But to answer your question, a D player will struggle to run 3-4 balls and every single shot the odds are against them making it, unless it's very easy. But even easy shots, look tough.

As far as the AB/CD, a D player will only play D,D+,C,C+ players unless they're in the final 5 players.

Thank you for your reply. So let's say there's 30 players in the tournament and somehow I magically make it to the top 5, I would then have to play A or B players, but I'm assuming they would have to give me some games on the wire? If it's a race to 9, they would have to win all 9 games while I would need to win less, correct?

That is correct.

Where do you play out of? Which pool room? Someone there should know your skill level.

Unless things have changed, enrolling in the Tri-State Tour requires an endorsement from your local room owner or league operator, who vouches for your skill level.

Is it double elimination races to 9 ? If so, are C/D still separated from A/B on the losers side ?

I usually play at Steinway Billiards in Astoria Queens, but I doubt anyone would be able to vouch for me since I've never played in any tournaments there yet. Just trying to get into a weekly tournament tour where I can play against people my own skill level and not get raped by A playerz just yet.

Many times un-vouched players begin their first tournament at the top (A+) and then are adjusted accordingly as their play becomes observed.

Well you will get to play in a tri state in your home room because the tri state will run a tournament there the weekend of November 23 - 24.

What's your name? Steinway is my homeroom as well.

The races are various depending on skill level. On the loser side, you still only play C/D players until you get into the final 5 or so players.

Sounds like a good way to test yourself and learn against stronger players. Maybe I'll give it a try.
