Trick Shots

Get back to me when you've mastered this one:

Hit the CB hard and full into the 1 with a ton of center-right english (stop shot). CB stops at position A, still spinning. 1-ball banks 3 rails, coming back to hit the CB. The CB's spin carries it 3 rails to pocket the 2-ball. Supposedly Stefano Pelinga's pretty good at this one, but I've never actually seen it done successfully. Anyone have a video? Mr. Yow, think you could video yourself doing this one? I have neither the video equipment nor the stroke, myself.

Man, I hate that shot! It's so unpredictable! It's funny though. I first saw it performed by its (alleged) creator, George Middleditch, who made it within a few tries. This was right at a year ago at VF. I haven't seen it performed since, but I have sat and watched Mike Massey poke at it 20+ times to no avail.

If I film it, it'll either take 5 minutes or all day, I presume. Maybe I'll do it on the billiard table, which will be all the more impressive!

Anyone know any good trick shots to learn or tryout?
There are lots of them, and there are several books full of them. I think the best book is Robert Byrne's "Treasury of Trick Shots" since he not only covers the old standards and many new ones, but he talks about the origins of the shots as much as possible. It's available from Amazon for $13 delivered to your door.

If you want a free source, go to a Borders or a Barnes&Noble and read some of the pool books in their Sports (or Games) section. Many of them will have trick shots.

There are trick shots and there are skill shots. Here is a trick shot that is about a hundred years old that even beginners can do. Freeze two object balls to the cushion and to each other in the middle of the end rail. Tap the two balls into place, if necessary. Now put the eight ball up on the cushion supported by the two below it. This may take some patience. Now take the cue ball to the other end of the table, and announce that you are going to hit the eight without the cue ball going off the table. Shoot softly towards the balls, and as the cue ball approaches the cluster, bang your fist on the table. The vibration causes the stack to collapse, the eight drops down and the cue ball hits it.

You're not going to believe this, but I filmed George Middleditch's relay run on a billiard table. I'll upload it for you in a few.

That was Paul Frankel. And, no, it wasn't. It took 10 minutes. I used a clean, slick white ball for about 15 attempts or so, then we changed to a spotted white. It was my 3rd try with the spotted ball. But, I had an audience waiting on me to hit it so I stirred the crowd as I begun to get close by saying, "when I hit it, someone yell out, 'alright, first try.'" It was funny.
