OK, first person to get this right wins an AZBilliards T-Shirt. Here is your question:

What happened on July 22nd at 160 W. 44th St. in New York City that marked a passage in time for the game of pool?

Bonus question (winner gets a piece of cheesecake from me if we ever run into each other where they serve it): Why did it happen?

Now we are left to just stand on the spot and tell random people on the street:

"No bar, no pinball machines, no bowling alleys, not even pool anymore. This WAS Ames Mister"

You get some funny looks, but people need to know...

Ames and 'Taxi Driver'

Okay, so here's an interesting and worthless nugget. I'm sure I remember seeing Ames Billiards in the background of the movie 'Taxi Driver' while Robert DeNiro was driving around the city. If Ames closed in 1966, and the movie was made in 1976, how can that be? Surely the sign wasn't still there 10 years later. Man, how cool would it be to have that sign? Maybe they had old New York footage they used, or maybe I'm wrong about seeing it. I'll have to check it out again-and then get a life!

When the original Ames closed in 1966 the owner, Abraham Ames, said he was going to try and find a new location and reopen. Perhaps he did and this is the sign you saw. Anyone know if he did, in fact, find another location?
