True Color of Money Cue?

I have a question? Is there a TRUE EXACT COPY of the Color of Money Cue? I know Joss made a copy of the cue for production sales. I have taken still frames from the movie and that cue is not even close to what was used in the movie if you are really paying attention. Is the orginal cue out there some where that was used in the movie? Does anyone think if I took the exact stills from the movie to a cue maker that they would make the exact copy of the orginal cue used in the movie? What would it cost? I want to know if this would be possible?

If my memory serves me correctly, I believe there were around 4 of those cues made. The producers couldn't afford to let Tom Cruise twirl a real balabushka around, so they got Joss to make a few identical pieces for shooting purposes. I believe after the movie was made, Tom Cruise had one, Paul Newman had one..there were probably 2 others..can someone else correct me if I'm wrong? (everything is from memory)

There were a few interesting things about the Colour of Money..before the movie, Tom Cruise couldn't play pool to save his life (same as Paul Newman before he shot the Hustler). But like Paul Newman, he got quite good in pool after the movie. And another thing..IT LOOKS NOTHING LIKE A BALABUSHKA! I haven't seen many balabuskhas in person or on the net, but I don't think George Balabuskha ever made one that looks the piece used in the movie. It does look beautiful though..I believe Skip Weston can do a beautiful replica of it.. :)

I believe those cues made for the movie had spliced points. In fact, I believe Dan Janes still makes spliced cues on custom orders..But I think the prices would be quite high. :p

The only problem is that it won't have those nice CNC points if Skip makes it...lol.

In the stills that I have from the movie the points are rounded. I don't know allot about cues, but I believe when they are rounded a CNC machine is used to make them?

Not correct. Pantographs and CNC mills both use the same round cutter. It is up to the cuemaker wheather or not to leave them round or to sharpen them up by hand.

Like I said I do not know allot about cues. I just know from the stills I have from the movie the points are rounded. So question? If I have the cue made should they use a CNC machine or Pantographs? Which would be better?

I'm not a good person to ask about round inlays. I would contact Dan Janes if you are interested in having the cue made as he made the one in the movie. Having someone else make it would be a rip off.

Well I am sure if you paid him enough.. lol

His CNC is for decorative inlays only, but he goes in and clips all corners now. He used to leave coockie cutter inlays, but he smartened up.

> The Billiard Pro Shop in Cordova,Tn,and an unlogoed, signed, nearly identical copy several years ago before it changed locations. It was priced at 5500.00. No clue if anyone bought it,but I only saw it once. The one in the movie had typical Joss pantographed points,"veneer" colors were black, double wide red,and natural maple with a black center point. The one the Pro Shop had were colored black, natural, red, natural then the black point. Very close, but not quite. Still not worth 5500,even signed by Newman and Cruise. It would be nice if someone would scan a copy of a late 80's Joss catalog here. The Joss that Mike Sigel played with is,to me,the prettiest cue I have ever seen. The cue I am referring to,was sold along with his case and Southwest/Kersenbrock break cue were sold by John Wright shortly before his death for the paltry sum of around 13000,a travesty considering the historical signifigance of these cues, they only won about 45-50 titles with Mike pushing them.

color of money cue

There were 4 cues made. Two have been sited to their owners already. I know where the third is. The owner used to be a stakehorse for Minnesota Fats, and fats gave him the cue. I have seen the cue, and it is as authentic as one can determine from stills from the movie.

I would think bill Stroud of JW cues would know how it was made and could make you one. he was with dan at this time i belive.
Another person you could ask is keith Mc... seeing how he was in that movie and saw the cue.
just my 2 cents.
Also if your really wanting to match it 100% get the movie, grab a frame off the movie on the computer, blow it up in Photoshop and that should be easy enough to get the cues colors ect.

I don't think Bill was a part of Joss at the time of the movie.
