Truing up work

I'm using the Mid America Deluxe lathe and some shafts I just can't get them to run true. With just 1/4" of wood showing, the ferrule still shows some wobble. Some shafts are great, but it seems more are really bad. Everything is tight, I've used the steady rest and the 4 jaw chuck and still can't get some shafts to run true. Am I missing something?

maybe the last guy who put ferrules on the cues wasnt concerned with how true it was running and now you have some that are actually on different axis.

rolling papers between shaft and jaws just have to find the right jaw and how thick it is easy once u do it a time or two hope this helps you doug moore:thumbup:

I'm trying to copy and paste from my phone. Check the link above Tank. Joey sells a jig to help with that problem. I just ordered one but I'm sure more than 1 order at a time would be more cost affective for the machinest.

Joey's Jig is for getting your Points even..

If the problem is they are warping, cut less, wait more time between and use a sealer.

If the end is rolling out. The problem is most likely how you put the shafts in the lathe when facing off the end after/when putting in the insert. If you hold the ferrule end in the chuck then jam the Collet/Steady-Rest on the insert end.... it really doesn't need to be cocked very much to see a roll-out in the shaft. A 1/10 of a degree may not sound like much but it definitely is over 29"..... (someone else can do the math)

Try jamming the Collet/Steady-Rest on first and tap it inline until the ferrule end is very close to the center of the chuck jaws then tighten them down. Oh, and do the final face pass after the Insert or Thread has been completed.

They are not all going to be round. Some will be flater on one side and some will be egg shaped or oval. You can shim with various thicknesses of paper. You can loosen it and rotate it 90 degrees and chuck it up again, til you get it a close as possible. Sometimes you just have to trim as close as possible and then finish by hand. It is an art as well as science. Always make sure the contact surface of the jaws are clean and snug up your chuck from all three tightening positions (holes) around the rear ring of the chuck. Do not over tighten just snug it down at all three points.

If this is the problem, on my final passes. I loosen the chuck spin the shaft 1/8 of a turn take a small pass then continuing turning 1/8 until you spun it 360.......Only taken off the high side. Also dont over lighten the chuck like Todd stated...........Frank

THanks everyone for the info! I'm really thinking it's not the lathe as much as some of the cues I've been working on. My Samsara, Mordt and Whisler shafts don't move at all. However, I've done the "rotating the work" and that does seem to help, but there were a few other things mentioned above I haven't tried...but will!
