Truly Unique Pre-Mcdermott Jim Mcdermott 54 1/2" Custom Cue

$1200?

Yeah.

Irish linen?

Yeah....

And what's up with the short shaft?

Anyway, spectacular find. None of the others I have seen had that joint. I am suspecting this cue may be even earlier than 73-74...but that's just my gut talking.

Lower the price by at least a grand and I would be all over it.

If someone buys it at that price I have some cues to sell.

By the way, notice the bumper is the same as the bumper that would be used on the production McDermott cues.

I am looking for pics on my hard drive, but I seem to remember I saw that exact same butt sleeve on an early McDermott. It had no sticker on it but it was for sale as an early McDermott several years ago.

Interestingly, I remembered this post:

Myself and others had identified it as a Brunswick.

You can see the joint came apart. The owner at that time sent me a pic after he repaired the joint. It was a similar same pin to what we see in the post the current thread is about. As you can see, it also has a McDermott style bumper, and in green. I was disappointed with the repair and was not willing to offer much.

It looks like I may have missed out on an early McDermott. If you scroll down that thread you will see the owner did eventually say it was a McDermott.

Is anybody else familiar with McDermott having used that crown logo early on?

Is it in fact a McDermott?

Here is the pic of the repaired joint.

If this is all correct, and thiese features identify an early Jim McDermott cue, then I recently passed one up on Ebay with a blue bumper that was in nice shape and went dirt cheap.

Yes. I have seen that.

I have seen Valley cues and Brunswick branded cues with the same joint and the same bumper.

I figured they were made by valley.

That exact bumper is found on cues from the 60's through the 70's on non- McDermott cues.

Until we saw this one posted today with the McDermott sticker on it, I never thought they were McDermott cues, but they did use the same bumper.

I figured McDermott just sourced the bumpers from the same place or bought them from Valley.

Interesting story? Yup.

I think the story is just that like many other cue repair guys and cue makers, McDermott sold other cues...and he happened to put his sticker on it because he sold it out of his shop.

That's what I am thinking.

I don't really think these are Jim McDermott's work.

The one I mentioned that I passed up on Ebay was one I figured was a Valley. That's why I didn't buy it.

But somebody identified the one for sale in this forum (that I linked to) as a McDermott. Why? Who identified it as such? I am really curious and I did PM the person that had it for sale.

Interesting cue.

Irish Linen? No, I don't think so. Looks like Nylon / Dacron.

All the best,
WW

This cue, with the crown logo, is identified as a Style Craft cue made and/or sold by by Gene Small in Fontana Wisconsin. It is not a McDermott.
