Try this shot

I was practicing this the other night because a friend challenged me. The object is to sink the 8 in the corner pocket without letting the cue ball touch the rail. It looks easier than it is LOL. I think I hit the rail 5 times before I was able to do it right.

Actually, it is not a hard shot at all. Just a speed shot. I have actually pocketed the spotted ball and made the CB stop before the last diamond. Must be on a fast table though.

I don't recall ever trying this where you don't want to hit the end rail with the cueball. I am guessing though you hit the cueball with a low(almost draw) type stroke where the cueball starts by spinning backwards, then half way to the 8, starts rolling forward, but when contacts the 8, transfers all speed to the 8 and the cueball almost stops dead. Slow rolling the cue we call it.

I actually shoot the shot with a little high left. It puts spin on the CB and when it contacts the spotted ball you have a fuller hit on the SB playing it into the left side of the pocket almost killing the CB.

I was doing this on a newly felted 9 ft Diamond. He used the new Brunswick felt which is like shooting on glass. The difficulty varies on the table.

Or you could try Efren's way, which is to stop the cue ball dead when it hits the spotted ball. You need some elevation and inside english for the shot. The best I've done on it is shooting from one diamond above the side pocket. When done right, the cue ball doesn't more more than a ball from the impact point.

You need an understanding table owner if you're going to practice the shot. It will leave marks.
