Trying Cues Before you Buy

I'm a little new to this forum, and I am interested in upgrading to a new cue sometime this summer for next fall, (maybe a $300-$500 sneaky or similar, no fancy shmancy inlays needed) and I was wondering if there was an upcoming show, or maybe a great place that has many different cues in the Midwest that is set up that you can try out a few dozen shots or so before purchasing. I'm in Chicago and I wouldn't mind spending a few day trips shopping around. A trip to a consistently good custom cue maker (I'd pay up if the service and warrantee was good) is certainly within reason if they are set up to let you try out a few shots first.
I really liked a friends Meucci a lot, but after some of the complaints I've recently read, sounds like I need to keep looking. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I would think you to be a fool if you went anywhere other than the Wanted/Forsale section right here on AZ. No, I am not kidding. You have dealers, cuemakers, collectors and folks that just like to buy and sell cues. You should be able to get out and try a few of your friends cues to find out what you like in a cue. Here you can ask previous buyers what they think of the person you are dealing with. A lot of us take them back if you are not satisfied. That has been my experience anyway.

Oh, I have bought and sold about 50 cues here.

for $300-$500 you can get a customize sneaky made by cuemakers known for making good hitters. (Frey, Varney, etc.)

Worse comes to worse and you don't like the hit (i'd be surprised if you didn't) you could resell it and not take too serious a loss

Even Josey Sneaky Petes are really close to that range on pricing. If you want to go a bit higher, check out Joe Gold at Cognoscenti. He is located in Chicago and you should be able to get some hands-on time with his cues. His plain-jane cues are priced at around $1200 I think.

Which hall do play from? I'm also in Chicago and would be happy to lend my opinions or let you test hit a few of my cues. AZ's 'For Sale' section is an excellent place to start your search. If you don't mind a drive, contact Erik Lee in Aurora (http://www.erikleecues.com/). He has a Pau Ferro BCM in your price range and worth the money. If you like flat-faced 3/8 joints, this cue is perfect. PM your info to me if you'd like.

Yeah, I know this is a popular way to go and a great way to get a good deal, but I really want to look at the cue in person before I buy it. My personal feeling is that there is no substitute for a hands on approach. Just my quirk.

That's not a quirk buddy, that is the smart way to go. I hope you find exactly what you are looking for. Try a few of the guys in Chicago as mentioned above. You can't go wrong dealing with an AZ seller.

I don't mind a drive at all, in fact I thought it would be fun to go around, take a few road trips, even out of state, to see some new faces and places and maybe learn some things.

The Erik Lee site looks like a great place to start. I'll PM my info. I usually play at Chris's on Milwaukee. Thanks!
