Hi, I'm currently trying to figure out the joint diameter of the shaft that I play with because I am making a custom cue from Gulyassy and i don't like the shaft to sit flush on the butt (have edges in or out) so I want the exact same diameter in the butt, as my shaft.

Shaft is universal smart shaft, it has an adapter. and I am not sure the size of that diameter, if anybody knows, please let me know, its not modified, the adapter always the same size comes from the manufactor. Here's a link of the shaft for more look.

some people told me its .850 diameter joint.
some told me its .845 diameter joint.

i want it to be 100% sure, thanks guys

I could be wrong but I think the universal shafts are .842, Mike's cues are about .845. I also thought he preferred the 3/8X10 acme which is not standard for a smart shaft. I'm sure Mike knows the answer your looking for.

yea I asked Mike, he makes cues with .860 but he can make it .840 if I ask him to, but he didn't knew what diameter the Universal smart shaft is, and I don't know too, thus I'm asking here to make sure before making the cue.

also i've been searching, looking, and asking some big cue websites, nobody seems to know, everyone is telling me the Shaft is discontinued, which i do know, but I only want to know the diameter of the joint, hope somebody that is 100% sure knows the measure tells me,

I tried also to look on to how to messure it myself, i couldn't figure it out, it needs tools that I dont have.

Calipers are $15.
How much are all your long-distance phone calls?

I know, that's not much help for you at the moment so try this.
Wrap a piece of masking-tape around the joint of the cue.
Mark it exactly where it starts to overlap.
Take the tape off the cue and measure from the start of the tape to the mark.
Divide that measurement by 3.14159(pi). That will give you your joint diameter.
It's better to be .002" too big rather than .002" too small.

PS. Just wondering here, you're not having your new cue's joint dia. built to match your shaft's dia. are you?
In my mind anyway, it makes more sense to let the builder do his default dia. and match the shaft to that.

KJ, yes I understand that, but the universal smart shaft is discontinued and i have 5 of them already, and i really love them. thats why i'm matching the cue's joint dia, to my already excisting shafts, by the way i've tried your method and its not working good for me, couldn't do it right :( i'm bad at these things since i'm a little kid. lol

i'll try asking around.

Thanks everybody, I got the information now, it is infact .839, thats why I adore this website, rep to you all.

follow-up question, if the shaft joint is .839, and the butt's joint diameter is .840, will that make it perfect fit? or does the cue-maker tend to make butt's and shaft diameter same sized? I don't want the shaft to sit flush.

I get a little confused by your question of saying you do not want the shaft to be flush, Or do you? It is always better if the cue maker has both shaft and butt for a nice fit.

Technically, both should have a slight taper, and measure exactly the same at the very edge.
The edges are typically very slightly rounded or chamfered to allow for slight imperfections, and you wont actually be measuring the exact edge, so depending on how far back you go on each piece there might be close to a .001 difference between the butt and shaft and still be a perfect fit.
If the joint pin is true, and the shaft and butt are within 2 or 3 thousandths, the fit will be good. Obviously, the closer you get to perfect, the better, and this especially true when taking measurements, since it's the foundation of the whole project.

I have two of the adapters; they measure 0.839" and 0.841". Probably just a production variance.

It's always better that the cue maker have both parts of the cue when makeing anything. I had shafts matched up to cue butts before but never a butt to a shaft !! Anyhow send him the shaft you will be useing if you want it to be exact. I know the universal adapters are plastic but either way he will beable to match it exact for you ,,,,,<<ED

i actually think they match up better if the shafts is .001 smaller than the butt.

that is just me though.
