If anybody has any idea what kind of table this is please tell me. It's an 8 foot pro size table. it's all heavy wood and glued crossmembers under the slate. The slate is 1". I know it's at least 40 years old. There is a stenciled name " E STINSON" on one end of the lower frame. Thanks in advance.

I can't say, but several years back I had a table that looked just like that one, mine had a 1 piece slate. I never could find a name on mine at all, but a few of the old timers around said that they believed it was built by an older fellow over in Kinston, NC.,in a small shop in his back yard, and they felt it was at least 50 years old. That picture brings back alot of memories,,,was a great playing table.

this one has 3 piece slate. the rails are dead so I'm going to put on new rails and cloth. The first time I saw it was in the 70's. It's a solid table that's for sure.

do you know a good table mechanic in the raleigh area?

not really, there is a pool table shop over in Mooresville that has a good one I hear, but I'm not sure of the name. Sorry

That's a Van Wyck table made in SC. This area is saturated with them and they are not fun to work on. They are one piece slates and the slate is tapped out to receive 6" lags screws with several washers from underneath and they go in all different directions. The pockets are not bolted in and they use felt doubled up to to secure them in the rails.

I would NEVER buy one personally!

I'm in Mooresville so hopefully it's me you refer to! My company is called The Table Pro.

Unfortunately I don't venture too far away from home or I would go to Raleigh. There is a guy East of Greensboro that does good work, I'll see if I can locate him for the OP.

Robin this one has 3 pieces of slate and they are bolted from the top. the pockets are bolted at each rail. I took it apart when I moved it. The cushions need to be replaced but everything else seems pretty solid. I covered a lot of tables when I was in college but that was in the 70's. I haven't done any cushions and I wasn't sure how difficult that would be. I was trying to decide whether to sell it or fix it.

That looks identical to all the Van Wyck's I've worked on (unfortunately too many of them). The legs and cabinet are the give away. Not sure they are still making them but perhaps they changed their engineering. If so, you are lucky as there are 6 lags screws per rail in everyone I've seen. Hopefully others that have run across them can verify me.

I sent you a P.M. for a good mechanic in your area if you are still looking.

thanks Robin. this one has 3 pieces of slate and the holes are camfered on top for the screws. I was helping a friend out that was having some hard times and needed to sell it. I first saw this table in the mid 70's. my friend said it was over 60 years old but I have no idea about that. I'm pretty sure Van Wyck wasn't in business at the time. We hooked up propane at the original owners house and that's when I saw the table. Thanks for the pm
