I am in west texas and I am looking for any recommendations on an instructor in this area. I am a 7 in APA nine ball and I was a 6 in APA 8 ball but I don't play 8 ball any more... I don't like it. Which brings me to my next question, is limiting myself to only 9 ball hindering my ability to advance and become more consistent? I have played well enough to beat some of the 8's in my league by a considerable margin and then a week or two later I'll lose by a close margin to a 6 or 7. Any help or info is greatly appreciated.

8 or 9?

It's been said that "9-ball is for shooters, 8-ball is for thinkers". There's truth in this; there are important strategic differences in the two games.

That said, the same skills are generally needed to play both games...playing either will also help with playing the other. Playing carom games will help even more.

There are a number of great instructors not far from you...I'm sure you'll hear from several of them here shortly!

Donny, I agree with what you're saying.... I started learning on 9 ball and have stuck to it for the most part.... Maybe it mostly habit..... But I will look into learning some type of carom game... Thank you

Scott I have seen you recommend him In other threads as well.... I'll be sure to contact him.... He's about 5 hours away.... I have also looked at your site as well but I guess I'm quite a ways away from you... Thank you for the recommendation

I suggest trying to play some of all games. Straight Pool, One Pocket, Bank Pool, Rotation, 8 Ball... Those are as far as the standard games go. There are tons of other games players might not have heard of.

Playing the different games requires different skill sets which carry over and compliment other games. Years ago when I started playing straight pool I found my 8 ball and 9 ball games got better. Then this past year I started playing One Pocket and my 8 ball game got stronger. I play a lot of bank pool and one pocket every week so when I need to bank I'm confident in it.

Play different players and constantly play better players than yourself.
